Election results deliver a warning shot to Silicon Valley.

one more point: whether Platner-shilling or Ramaswamy ad defending, there's an approach to politics that insists we ignore decency in favor of the barbarous because "practicality" demands it. The next time you see this (you will), ask whether you're seeing commitment to practicality or to barbarism
Appoint actual professors - educators - to the board of regents. No CEOs. No corporate lawyers. The people who do the teaching and research should be running universities. This is the only way they can truly serve the public good.
Higher ed board regents are appointed by the governor in Texas. Notably UT board chairman Kevin Eltife, A&M chairman Robert Albritton and Texas Tech chairman Cody Campbell's terms are all up in February 2027. All three heavily involved in college athletics at those schools.

EL-SAYED: And to all the parents who struggled to explain to their kids why the president openly mocks someone for their name or how they pray, let them know tomorrow that the bad guys lost.
Because we have done so well in our history of physicians and the officials examining women athletes… 🙄 Imagine hating the idea of trans athletes competing in women sports so much you are willing to let your daughters be subjected to the most invasive breach of privacy
the Democratic Party voter protection infrastructure is largely because of Stacey Abrams which is also how I got my first official paid politics job and now here I am over 6 years later and we did it Thank you Stacey 💐
I hope Stacey Abrams is having the best time tonight. So much of what is happening in Georgia right now is because of her incredible work, and she should be celebrated for it.
Voted and got my COVID shot this morning! Civic duties done 👊🏼 (for today)
Happy Halloween from the Ned Lab! We had fun dressing up together at Rustbelt last night!
Amazing day at Rustbelt RNA! Wonderful science and colleagues - and a shout out to Alice in my lab who gave a great talk on her work investigating rna structure! #YinzGotRNA
What does do the midterms and the potential for Democratic control of congress mean for higher education? I argue that answer isn’t clear because the party has no cohesive frame for understanding higher education. www.chronicle.com/article/what...
Opinion | What’s at Stake for Higher Ed in the Midterms?
And why don’t the Democrats have a clearer vision for the sector?

People of the Machine: Q&A with historian Joy Rohde
Today’s generative AI companies promise systems that will surpass human capabilities—and often portray that future as inevitable. Public policy historian Joy Rohde argues that these promises echo a lo...

There’s no real question that data centers are conservative speech. That’s why institutions need to protect data centers from scholarly critique. Expect more and not less of this, although it probably won’t be this bumbling and transparent. Sheesh.

The $420M profit is equal to about 115 *five year* NIH grant funded research projects. 210 projects if we limit that to modular R01s. This is just the *profit*, not the value of the goods sold to the government.
ICE paid CoreCivic $495 million for a prison in Minnesota that's only worth $75 million. Asked why, CoreCivic said, “The federal government ultimately determined the sale price following its assessment process.” CoreCivic donated half a million dollars to Trump.
Had a lovely visit at Carnegie Mellon yesterday with great conversations about all the intricacies of RNA structure. Ended the day with a hockey night in Pittsburgh with the family! A day full of my favorite things (if only the Pens had held on for 0.9 more seconds 😅)
If this isn’t an official slogan for someone soon then I don’t even know what we are doing. “socialist, socialize, social, dont matter to me, lower my cost of living!”
Detroiter Nicole Williams when asked if Abdul El-Sayed is ‘a bit too left wing to win in Michigan’: “At this point what do we have to worry about? Anything but what we have. We're on our way to hell, so at this point: socialist, socialize, social, dont matter to me, lower my cost of living!”
Rest in Power to this amazing woman. I have a framed piece of art dedicated to her in my office that I look at every day. On my wall she sits alongside images of Bayard Rustin, Grace Lee Boggs, Steve Biko, Marsha Johnson, and Emma Goldman. I hope they get to hang.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP) — Dolores Huerta, United Farmworkers co-founder and civil rights icon, has died, her family says.
Why would you outsource thinking about your kid? I love when I get these kinds of prompts from kiddos teacher because it gives me a reason to reflect on who he is right now Genuinely don’t understand these pod people.
cool, cool
I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.
We resent universities as proof that a touch‘o’socialism is good actually so we blame them for all of capitalism’s externalities.
I am consistently vexed by the fact that elite consensus is more interested in holding US colleges and universities accountable for things that they have a little control over - white color wages, rent in Santa Barbara - than things they can influence - campus safety, instructional approach.
“The administration’s view is that the mere presence of students of color at elite schools is incontrovertible proof of discrimination against white people.”
The plain fact of it is thus: the Trump administration wants to re-segregate higher education. It is a racist project straight-up-no-chaser. Accommodating any of this puts you on the wrong side of history, makes you a collaborator in this project. ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics...
Absolutely here for this! And waiting for my kids to eat anything besides a Fuji 😅(which is great but only sweet!)
Fall is here. So we can finally talk about this serious topic... Jonagold vs. Honeycrisp apples.
<huge sigh> It's just not true that most scientists working on cutting-edge research are doing it outside of the federal ecosystem (universities, national labs, etc.), except in very limited areas. To the extent the system has changed, it's because of sabotage. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/22/o...
"the moment you compromise the rights of a trans person in America, you compromise the rights of every citizen in America" - AOC quite healing to hear a single politician actually articulate this basic basic point
Trans voter to @aoc.bsky.social: Trans people in America feel like they've been abandoned by the Democratic Party, that we are a losing issue, that it's not worth defending us. What do you say to that? AOC:
We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.
Do you know how bad the abuse has to be for a judge to remove kids from their birth mother? Just saw Amy Acton’s CNN interview about that Ramaswamy ad and , listen, I lived in NC through the Willie Horton ad era. I’m not precious. This is so disgusting that I wish I believed in hell. I really do.
The History PhD program has been at UO since the 19th century and is among the top programs for environmental history (not to mention the role of PhD students in running classes at the university). It'd be a shame to cut it for short-term budget issues. lookouteugene-springfield.com/story/univer...
