we've shared previously that we were planning another community day for August 22nd at @recurse.com, here are the details! more to come soon on talks and workshops 👀

Our migration last Friday went great and Roomy stayed up without babysitting all week-end! Everything went according to plan that time. 😀 Today's devlog talks more about what the next steps are and how we plan to get Roomy running completely on ATProto.

Phew! I just finished a big migration of the @roomy.space data to our refactored AppView! The new refactor stores the Roomy messages directly in the AppView instead of on our separate Leaf server, which was made for our pre-ATProto architecture. The goal is to improve simplicity and reliability.

Existing communities on Discord shouldn't have to choose between the critical mass of members they've built up on the legacy platform versus the agency afforded to them by @roomy.space Introducing Roomy's first premium feature: Discord-Roomy bridging! 🌉 (free for non-profits)

A bridge beyond Discord

Millions of digital communities have already made a home for themselves on Discord, and we'd rather not force them to make a binary choice between the critical mass of members they've built up on Disc...

🙈 You can now make private (invite-only) spaces on @roomy.space! Step 1 done, step 2 on the way very soon ✨

My @roomy.space roadmap for next few weeks: 1. Private spaces + invites 2. Permissioned channels + roles 3. Big refactor to AppView + XRPC interface / thin client 4. Push notifications all parallel to @zicklag.dev speccing and implementing an ‘arbiter’ RBAC service for ATProto permissioned spaces

At @roomy.space we've been cooking up the design for the next, ATProto-native iteration of Roomy, and that includes private data on protocol! The first component that we're working on is a group membership service that we're calling the "arbiter". Here's full overview of the design so far!

The Arbiter - Group Management for Permissioned Spaces and Beyond

The permissioned data proposal has the concept of membership, but leaves it to the app to orchestrate it. The arbiter is our idea for a general-purpose, interoperable ATProto group membership service.

So the issue here was that a Safari bug is truncating, i.e. just chopping the end off, of websocket messages over a certain size in @roomy.space. This makes the messages fail to parse and crashes the websocket. This isn't even in JS, this is in the browser itself.

Massive shoutout to @flo-bit.dev who stayed up late (sorry!) to fix that loading issue 🙏 zick doesn’t have any Apple device and Meri is busy talking to you all so flo truly came in clutch on this one, as he does <3 iOS/Safari is the bane of webdev I kid you not
