Gift link and important summary thread from us (at the Science and Environmental Health Network) on health harms from the gas-burning plants that are powering mega-data centers. 👇 Glad to see this NYT coverage. Documenting air and water pollution from data centers is one of our core projects.

"Less mentioned has been the pollution from the scores of gas-burning plants that will power these data centers....Nationwide, at least 82 gas-burning power plants are being built or have been proposed to power data centers" as per @envirointegrity.bsky.social. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/05/c...

Entirely consistent with @theatlantic.com's general politics-they don't mind at all if the dehumanization of the left results in violence against the left. They put more effort into defending the FEELINGS of the right/fascists than they do into defending the rights of the left to even exist.

*Parasites* ??? Really, @theatlantic.com ? We get it, you love centrism, but dehumanizing language is never ok.

If that's the course of action he pursues, he's calling GA voters illegitimate...he was humiliated as a committed lifelong racist that it was Black voters in Georgia who were instrumental in his defeat"

There's an OMB rule change that would require political oversight of scientific grants, and could pull any that don't "reflect presidential priorities" Another country has tried this before! It was the USSR and it was called Lysenkoism. By @thsaey.bsky.social www.sciencenews.org/article/omb-...

Here’s what happens when you put politicians in charge of science

Proposed federal rules would rely on political appointees to decide how a lot of U.S. science gets done. History shows the consequences of such actions.

I say to you what I say to Schumer Your lack of follow up plan is disgustingly and irresponsible. A 5-4 ruling shouldn’t be a victory lap It should be a sobering call that we need a proactive plan It should include a real message about how this affirms an America you will protect

No, AI is not the answer to an overburdened review system, groaning at the seams. No, AI should not replace reviewers: authors did not consent to having their unpublished work fed into LLMs by journals and/or unscrupulous academics like you.

Not only can AI replace reviewers, it should in most cases. I've had referees in top 5 journals say in writing that they used Google to adjudicate whether "caste was a proxy for social class."

In a system where there is no incentive to do a good job and editors have no accountability, you get this type of nonsense pretty regularly.

AI cannot replace reviewers. This isn’t a point about capacity. The purpose of reviews is to understand what a scientific community thinks about a paper. An LLM cannot know what I would think about a paper, so by definition it cannot replace me and it can’t replace you.

When the Reflecting Pool was replenished after a $14 million-plus renovation, ducks quickly took to the water. But then dead ducks were found nearby. The carcasses found in Constitution Gardens will undergo necropsies to determine cause of death.

⚠️ WARNING: ICE abducted a pet owner, leaving two dogs to starve for a week. Only the landlord saved them. This isn't a mistake; it’s a sickening pattern. When agencies treat people as disposable, innocent lives become collateral. This cruelty must end.
