One of the things that, as lead writer, I had to bang into the head of senior leadership sometimes was that writers were not interchangeable even within a project. One writer knew a certain companion inside and out. When we lost that writer, a new writer coming in took twice as long to do the work.

I wrote my first novel longhand in an A6 journal I kept next to the cash register while working nights at a burger shop, 10-15 words at a time in between orders. I wrote the next 5 during tram rides to and from uni lectures. It’s always possible.

Getting my head around how from 2010-2017 I was an author, and from 2018-2026 I was writing more (and better) than I'd ever written in my life but all of it was going into a locked trunk so I was, publicly, no longer an author, and a year from now I will once again be an author. I'm coming home.
