Marie Curie, her daughter Irène, and Irène's husband Frédéric all won Nobels on radiation and died of blood cancers. 😢 Marie Curie's notebooks are so radioactive that they may only be opened by people wearing protective suits - and they're stored in lead-lined boxes at the Bibliothèque Nationale!

Cosmic rays with energies up to 4 PeV were long thought to originate largely from supernovae within our Galaxy. Now it appears that some of these energetic cosmic rays could be accelerated by binary systems comprising one massive star and one neutron star or black hole.

Identifying a New Cosmic-Ray Accelerator

The observation of ultrahigh-energy radiation from a binary star system suggests that such “gamma-ray binaries” could be significant contributors to the cosmic-ray spectrum.

It takes the Sun 225–250 million years to orbit the Milky Way’s centre. A Galactic Year. Travelling at 515,000 mph, we’ve only made about 20 laps in the Sun’s 4.6 billion year history. The last time we were in this spot, dinosaurs were just appearing! 🦖✨

The constant condescension about ai is another aspect of it that makes me hate it more. The assumption is you can only be against it because you don't understand it like I do. No man. I don't like voluntarily making every human enterprise dependent on a tech run by a tiny group of financial maniacs
