“Have you frightened them all away?” he whispers to the okuri-okami, lowering his bow and letting its knocked arrow point to the earth. Ominously, the dark centers of the wolf's pale eyes roll up to meet his stare. “Only you are allowed to eat me? Is that it?”

It gives no answer, of course. Suguru smiles, nevertheless grateful for the company.

While fleeing the Zen’in clan, Suguru takes up shelter in the shadow of an abandoned shrine, deep within forests said to crawl with all manner of monster. Soon enough, he finds himself with a strange, nightly companion: a great white wolf as liable to devour him as protect him.

All thoughts of swan hunting flutter away. Satoru cannot help himself. In place of an arrow, he reaches between his teeth and whistles loudly.

Instead of startling forward, the bather straightens up. Crane-like, they turn so their chin juts into a beak over one exposed shoulder. Both equally unabashed by the other, Satoru's grin turns into a crescent moon.

“Sorry! This lake’s supposed to be cursed. Wasn’t sure if you were some kind of creepy kappa or a beautiful bathing maiden.”

Laughter answers him back in ripples. “Neither.”

Slow as the water sloughing off his mystery bather’s skin, a pair of elegantly muscled thighs pass between the reeds and offer the Gojo prince a peek at why both of his assumptions had been incorrect.

“Oh.”

The bather chuckles again while he collects a few garments dangling over a nearby branch. Satoru clucks his tongue. A monk."

On the surface, it was a fair deal, if not better than fair. It was a good enough deal that no one would reasonably offer it if they didn’t have something to hide."

‘You’ve trained for this, Satoru.’

For as long as he can remember. His entire life, perhaps.

When he was four years old, Satoru went on his first annual family ski trip. By the end of the second day, he was bored of inching down the bunny hill with his skis in permanent pizza, stuck behind an instructor who was too slow for him. He saw his cousins launching themselves sideways off the kickers in the snow park and threw a tantrum in the middle of the green run until his parents put him on a board.

He was six when he won his first competition. Ten when he got on a plane by himself to spend an entire season training in North America. And Satoru was 16 when he took silver at his first ever Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

All his life, he’s followed the snow. When spring arrives in the north, he flies south. And when it arrives in the south, he heads home again. Season after season after season spent chasing winter around the world.

Satoru has lived in near endless cold and dark, and all of it for this. All for a single day of competition that only comes around once every four years. All in the name of becoming the greatest snowboarder of all time.

He’s trained for this.

And it wasn’t all bad. Even if he held back tears the whole way from Tokyo to Vancouver — a 10 year old Satoru thought he’d lose points for crying in front of the cabin crew; champions don’t cry — the moment he saw Tsukumo Yuki grinning at him through the glass as he was chaperoned off the plane, it became a little easier to blink them away. It’s been a little easier every year since.

Satoru has trained for this.

WIP wednesday - Twice Shy ch. 3 a follow up to last week’s

As he starts in on the pile of laundry before him, Suguru asks the question that has been on his mind for the better part of the past two days: “So, where were you last night?”
Satoru’s mouth draws into a sly smile. “Were you worried about me, Suguru?”
“No.” Suguru scoffs, all his attention focused on folding with neat, clean lines that will minimize wrinkles. He swallows and lifts a shoulder, feigning nonchalance. “No, but you’re always here whether I like it or not, so… without you, it wasn’t… it just wasn’t the same.”
A long beat of silence follows.
Suguru skirts his gaze up to steal a quick look at Satoru, who has yet to say anything. He is met with a cheek-dimpling grin and a set of crinkled, half-moon eyes fixed on him; Satoru’s curled pinky is pinched between his teeth, as if satisfying the need to bite and hold something. The vampire is so transparently delighted that Suguru half expects him to giggle and twirl his hair.
“Sounds like someone missed me~”
“I enjoyed some much-needed alone time.” Suguru keeps his eyes on the sweater in his hands, avoiding the dreamy stare he knows is still locked upon him. “And a quiet, peaceful night in.”
“Sure you did.” The soft, grinning laugh he lets out has Suguru’s neck burning fever-hot under his sweatshirt collar. “Well, I was out of town. On family business.”

i guess i didn't share this here! very rough look at the ski (snowboard) fic sequel 🏂 struggling to find motivation for fandom recently, but the olympics started and... yeah, i'm gonna finish it. despite how it looks, it WILL be #satosugu and it WILL be E rated. and it WILL be fantastic *shrugs*

As Satoru pulls in, Yaga is standing there with his arms folded over his chest, looking even more furious than Satoru feels. Confronted by that stony expression, it’s practically instinct to apologise at this point.

‘Sorry.’

‘Are you?’

‘No.’ He’s just being honest. ‘That was sick.’

All at once, Yaga deflates, scrubbing his hands over his face. ‘It was,’ he admits. Satoru notices a vein throbbing in his temple and hopes the old man took his blood pressure medication. ‘I don’t know what the hell they’re thinking.’

‘They’re hoping I’ll kill myself for real this time,’ he says cheerfully.

‘Keep your voice down.’

Yaga is looking around nervously, but Satoru has never felt so locked in. His mind has never felt more clear. He’s so fucking enraged that he’s moved beyond anger altogether. It’s just pure, single-minded focus.

He looks off down the course at where Kashimo is earning oohs and aahs using the move that he made famous.

‘I’m gonna run it again.’

There’s a long pause, filled only by the gasps of the crowd as his countryman takes a hard bail on his last run. The announcer’s voice booms around the mountainside, underscored by the incessant beat of the kick snare rhythm blasting from the speakers.

‘What the hell…’ Satoru prepares to make his case, but then, ‘Sure.’ Turning to his coach in surprise, he finds Yaga wearing the same stony expression as before, but this time, Satoru knows it isn’t for him. ‘Give ‘em hell, kid,’ he says, voice gruff. ‘How are you feeling?’

‘Good.’ It isn’t even a lie. The ache in Satoru’s pelvis is easy to ignore when he’s this fucking fired up, all the adrenaline coursing round his system. ‘I can do it.’

At last, Yaga claps Satoru on the shoulder, cuffs him round the back of his neck. ‘I know you can.’

‘It’s my birthday today.’

Stubbornly, Yūta does not wish him a happy birthday, but he doesn’t seem to mind. Doesn’t even seem like he’s talking to Yūta at all, actually.

‘Never thought I’d make it to 28,’ he says with this pensive lilt to his voice that’s almost musical. ‘Never thought I’d make it to 18 to be honest.’ He almost sounds cheerful when he says, ‘Satoru could have saved himself a lot of trouble if he’d just got it over with.’

Could have saved Yūta a lot of trouble, too. That’s the first thought that springs to mind, but it arrives without any real fire behind it. More like a habit than a genuine feeling.

It’s just that it’s hard to hate someone who seems to take such genuine delight in the taste of an apple. When he finally bites into it, his eyes flutter shut and his brow creases, jaw rolling slowly as he thought he’s doing his utmost to savour every burst of flavour on his tongue. Sitting there on a rock with his apple in hand, he sinks his fingers into the snow and drags them through the moss and breathes deep.

Then, for the first time in the two weeks they’ve been on the road together, Getō smiles.

Yūta has seen this man’s smile on the battlefield, but the gentle thing he’s wearing as he turns his face towards the sun isn’t that. it's been three thousand years (3 months) since my last wipsday, and i'm back with the exact same fic 😭 the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026 have been something. if i don't get back to writing regularly soon, i'm going to explode #wipwednesday #stsg

The air between them is light when they sneak into the dorm, snickering almost loudly enough to attract Yaga’s attention.
“Shower, then food,” Satoru declares gesturing at himself, then at Suguru, “food, then shower.”
“Oh? You don’t want to shower together?”
“We can do that tomorrow. I’m too hungry to focus.”
“Bet I could make you focus,” Suguru murmurs, but he’s already moving towards the kitchen. “Hurry up, then. We’re not making anything fancy.”
He starts on cup noodles, with egg, scallions and tomato juice to add some actual nourishment. By the time Satoru comes back from his shower and switches with Suguru, there’s nothing left to do but dump the noodles and broth into bowls. Satoru grins like he’s won by having Suguru do all the work, but the joke’s on him. He’ll find the noodles way too spicy for his taste.
Knowing his dinner is on the line--Satoru is more than capable of gobbling up both portions--Suguru keeps his shower brief. He’s not keen to be alone with his thoughts at the moment anyway. They keep circling back to the conversation with Suzuki, and Satoru’s unexpected takeaway.

It strikes Suguru that this is the second time in less than a week that Satoru has done some genuine self-reflection, and even communicated his concerns. Meanwhile, what does Suguru have to show for himself? Denial and wilful blindness on Suzuki’s level at best, malicious intent at worst. Suguru’s being selfish, plain and simple, and Satoru is letting him get away with it.
Odd. Concerning, even.
Back in the kitchen, Suguru discovers that his portion of the noodles is not only untouched, but seems to hold the majority of the fresh ingredients. They sit down to eat in the common area. The dorms are quiet, empty. The few upperclassmen that still cling to life as sorcerers have all been dispatched on missions. Suguru wants to question Satoru’s unusual courtesy, but doesn’t know how without sounding like an ungrateful brat.
