My strongest 9/11 memory comes from a month later. I was manning the stand for the Japan Society at Freshers' Fair. The stalls being arranged alphabetically, the Islamic Society was adjacent. Two freshers walked up and called out something like "why would we associate with terrorists" at them.

Modern remotes modulate the infrared signal at around 40 khz because the first optical remotes used receiver circuitry that was adapted from the acoustic receivers. So in a sense, they are still with us.

The Zenith "Space Commander" was the 1st TV remote control and used no batteries. Each button cocked and fired a hammer into 1 of 4 calibrated metal rods of different lengths which generated an ultrasonic tone like a tuning fork. The TV had a microphone to listen for it.

Kurt Füchslin captured this video of frozen methane bubbles in Sihlsee (Lake Sihl) in Switzerland. Deep in the depths, bacteria break down decaying organic matter, producing bubbles of methane. As they reach the thickening surface ice, they're trapped as flammable fart pancakes/ice art.

One reason England does so well is our second generation immigrants outperform their peers which is not true in most OECD countries. We are also very good at integration. And it's v sad that this is never acknowledge in debates on immigration.

New PISA data out England is now top ten in all three areas (reading, maths, science) and the second highest performing country outside of east Asia (after Estonia). This is a huge public policy success.

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

The quilt Fair New Mexico-41 Fair Years incorporates more than six hundred of the ribbons she won at the fair every subsequent year except 2020 (when the fair was canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic). Johnson earned ribbons for needlework, knitting, crochet, pies, cookies, cakes, canning, jewelry, flowers, vegetables, and potted plants. The title of the quilt is a reference to the state song, and the design places the state's Zia sun symbol at the center. 3/ The unfair-trade piece is the bigger miscalculation. For the first 20 years of Japanese competition, decades ago, the Big Three argued Japan's edge was cheap labor. In reality, their edge was lean production, and it took GM over two decades to copy it.

1/2 Hi all, Mitsubishi have announced the new Pajero today. Let me tell you why this new version is a retrograde step over the previous ones. It reverts to a ladder frame chassis for the first time since the 2nd gen & instead of the 3.2 diesel or 3.5 V6 you get a 2.4 diesel.
