The High Court also heard RTC leader Ben Cullen had threatened physical violence to a resident removing flags, boasting that he was a “violent criminal” who had served 15 years in prison. Full report in today’s Clarion: oxfordclarion.uk/the-clarion-...

no one making $ on scholarly books, certainly not academic presses, which are being starved by unis who once supported publication but now totally devalue research. from friends/editors at university presses, book sales are down 25% this year & the forecast is bleak. now no libraries buying books.

Greetings, Psst, most academics aren't making much money from their book publications. They can't use their royalties. This means we are not popping our collars and purchasing prosecco or NA prosecco. The few scholars who are making bank are not publishing with university/academic presses.

You can/should read Emily Wilson's latest take on the Odyssey, but I'm logging on to convey my hairdresser's reaction. She was AGHAST that Nolan, with his million $ budget, gave Matt Damon ONLY 6 hair extensions. As a result, his hair did not blow around properly, & that ruined the film for her.

On this day, “36th of July” in 2024, a student-led movement toppled a brutal authoritarian in Bangladesh. Hasina fled to India where she remains, evading justice. Adnan Hossain was at Gonobhaban & sent me this remarkable photo. I couldn’t celebrate because I was in London giving media interviews

I don’t know who needs this perspective but I first came across Jason Arday in an autism parenting group. Everyone commented on how inspiring this is, how much hope the story gave them. It’s not that I want my not-fully-verbal child to become a Cambridge professor

A mother dolphin in Western Australia has been carrying the body of her 2-week-old calf through an estuary. Researchers say the behavior is believed to reflect a period of mourning that has been documented in dolphins before the mother eventually lets go to feed and survive.

Before stephensi arrived in 2013, Djibouti was on the cusp of declaring malaria eradicated. In 2012, there were just 27 cases. Two years later, cases shot up to nearly 1,700... and in 2020, there was an explosion: more than 70,000 cases. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/04/u...

Exclusive: The Trump administration is preparing to set a price floor and impose tariffs on polysilicon and related products, sources told Reuters, putting a material critical to solar panels and semiconductors at the center of US efforts to compete with China on AI and energy reut.rs/4yTmCad

Basically the height of caricature at this point: Israel is demanding that as part of the ceasefire agreement with Hamas, it be allowed to continue attacking Gaza.

🚨Israel has formally objected to three provisions in the Board of Peace approved roadmap for Gaza, including demands that would allow it to continue striking the territory, prevent Hamas’s collected weapons from remaining under the NCAG’s control, and exclude Qatar and Turkey from verifying compliance, Haaretz reported.

🔸 Continued Israeli attacks:
Israel is demanding continued freedom to carry out strikes across Gaza even after the agreement takes effect. A source familiar with the matter told Haaretz that “Israel demands freedom to strike areas of the Gaza Strip.”

Absolutely unbelievable how solar power has taken off worldwide during the Hormuz oil crisis. You don't have to hand it to him, but Trump may have done more to finally kick off a global civilization of effete librul solar users than anyone else in the West

Chart showing solar panel exports from China (the main solar panel maker by a long shot) growing steadily & mightily from 2018 through 2026, then spiking by almost 2x in March 2026.
