When a shape-changing assassin nearly kills the Mother on Niozene’s watch, she is stripped of her titles and given an ultimatum: return with the assassin’s head, or face excommunication from both her homeland and the afterlife. Desperate, she accepts the task as a final chance to prove herself and show the Mother she deserves a place as her daughter.

Allowed only the help of Sonsan, a surly tracker and criminal also facing excommunication, Niozene dreads that she may have lost her chance at redemption before she has even left home. But when Sonsan reveals that he shares the same strange shape-changing power as the assassin, Niozene realizes his assignment to accompany her is more than coincidence. As they track the assassin deep into a forbidden land, confronting demons, ancient magic, and the ghosts that haunt their dreams and blood, they must uncover the truth behind their quest—and the buried history neither knew they shared—if they wish to live to see their promised redemption.

"What are you thinking about in there? You always hide away when you begin thinking hard, and your shell is impossible to crack." He dipped her low and brought her back up, spinning her in a circle as he did so. She wasn't familiar with this dance, but he led with an expertise that could only be mastered from years at court.
"I - I'm coming to terms with the fact that I don't know where I stand in the world anymore. And that I have to rely on others, I can't do it alone." He cocked his head to the side as they continued to spin around the floor, the band beginning to pick up pace. "I'm surprised you admitted that, particularly to me."
She shrugged and leaned into his frame, bringing her cheek to his shoulder, her hand wrapped around the back of him. The soft curl of his hair fell around the collar of his tine shirt, shining in the candlelight.
They danced in silence for the rest of tune, and as they waltzed their final steps, Alwyn whispered to her "Wherever our paths may lead after this small adventure, I shall forever be glad we met, Moira." He gave her a small bow and kissed her hand, walking her over to Zekiriel. "I shall fetch us all some refreshments."

Chapter One
Only the night birds provided company in my caged existence. They sang for me after the sun dipped, gliding beyond my window’s metal bars as their trilling tunes wove through the moon’s light. They were my link to the outside world, a fragile tether to life beyond my warded room. My self-given name—Ava—was an homage to them, the beautiful creatures that kept me sane.
During the day, when I was granted time away from lessons, the noise and bustle of the street scared them beneath the eaves, into the holes and crannies of buildings. I’d sit, fists clenched, ears straining for their hopeful notes. But I was alone. The lectas didn’t count. They were caretakers, not company.
When streetlamps glowed in the satiny darkness, the night birds’ warbles piercing the quiet, I’d pull out my cello. My bow swept the strings like a feathered wing, and the resonant chords danced with the birdsong. They’d swoop and dive, triumphant in their freedom—something I’d never known and never would.
