The Story of Writing@sownow.bsky.social · 2mo agoOn this day in 1868, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified. It is best known for guaranteeing full citizenship and its protections to Black Americans. It also includes guidelines on disqualifying candidates who participated in insurrection or rebellion against the government.
BTW, Jackson's concurrence to the birthright citizenship case is gorgeous. She focuses in large part on the fact that minoritized people are most often the ones in favour of universal rights, whereas dominant majorities are more likely to oppose them.
A lot fewer people will be enraged by this, because it feels wonky — but I want you to think about how much harder it is to run progressive candidates when there’s even fewer restrictions on how these rich assholes can throw around their money.

By a 6–3 vote, the court guts another campaign finance statute and overturns a 2001 precedent that upheld restrictions on political parties' coordinated expenditures with candidates. YALL, the photos from Lubbock Pride are everything. When I was growing up in Lubbock, the second most “conservative” city in America, I would never have expected this— but I am SO HAPPY to be wrong.
I guess one difference between Jim Crow then and Jim Crow now is that we have cool graphics to show how it's done.

As Du Bois would later point out, the backlash of lost cause propaganda didn’t just create mass disinformation about the civil war itself, but about the opening for actual democracy that briefly came after it.

It's crazy to me how unadorned this all is. There's zero pretense that the FCC should be impartial, or that the media are here for both our entertainment and meaningful information. It's true that on the whole Carr's efforts have been a dismal failure, but the ambition is alarming in and of itself.

True: since Ford pardoned Nixon, almost everyone seems to get a "get out of jail free"/ don't go to jail in the first place card. Iran-Contra, Abu Ghraib, fomenting an insurrectionary riot etc etc etc. and no real consequences.

The whole performance wasn’t about the triumph of the individual, but the collective effort and joy that that elevates all of us out of oppression. They literally danced their way through and out of the history of colonialism TOGETHER.
I should add that my partner is an obsessive Olympics watcher, and cackled at the post below.

Why have these people not learned that standing up to bullies works more often than not? And even if you get beaten up, at least you have your pride.
