Books don't tell readers who they personally are or who they are supposed to be. They do show readers a variety of characters. Implicit in that is this: "Here are some ways of being." Kids books aren't altering your kid to be someone new. They are simply showing them parts of humanity.

Me scrolling on tumblr: oh yeah that illustration is by Trina Schart Hyman, one of my favorite illustrators, let’s see what the post says about her, oh is that what she looked like I LOVE the hair cut, I should do a studio portrait like that WAIT HOW DID I NOT KNOW SHE WAS GAY

The top of the image shows this text: “The artist is Trina Schart Hyman, an incredible and prolific talent who passed away in 2004. You can find a ton of tributes to her online from other illustrators and organizations, like the children’s literary magazine Cricket, which she helped create. She illustrated over 150 books, won the Caldecott Medal and Honors, and helped other artists land gigs for decades. She was also gay, hilarious, and one of the first white children’s book illustrators to include diverse characters.”
At the bottom is an illustrated image of an artist in a cluttered studio, desk covered and surrounded by books, mugs, plants, etc (and of course a cat.) The artist has short messy hair, is wearing a red sweater and gray jeans. She is looking out at the viewer as if briefly looking up from her work.

It’s Banned Books Week, and I don’t need you to buy my book as a solve for it (but buy it if you want to! That’s still extremely cool of you)—I need you to show up for your public libraries and your schools!

I see a lot of artists on here questioning whether they should be promoting their work in the current political climate. The answer is always yes. ART: books, music, film, painting, sculpture - all of it - is the most accessible way to communicate complex topics, ideologies and emotions.

I wanted to get a video of this ghost crab but every time I got close to their hole they scuttled back in, so I tried getting clever with it. I made a little sandcastle and shoved my phone into it, hit record, and walked away. Crab was VERY suspicious of this addition to their environment.
