This past weekend the Irish Times/IPSOS/B&A published a poll in which some of the questions posed to respondents focussed on Ireland’s so called ‘Triple Lock’ and our policy of military non–alignment, which is more commonly referred to as our neutrality. It won’t surprise anyone that I’m a big fan of Ireland’s traditional policy of non-alignment. It has served us well, seeing us through WWII, the so-called Cold War and the myriad of misguided adventurist wars (Iraq both times, Afghanistan, Libya etc etc) that we might otherwise have been part of and that many of our fellow country men and women who live in the six counties have been unwillingly made a party to.
