Exposed to smoke?
Reduce Future Exposure, Fight Inflammation

- the more active you are, the more air you breathe in, the more smoke you breathe in, reduce activity
- expect mental and emotional consequences as smoke moves through your body and brain, not just physical pain and headaches and difficulty breathing.
-Reduce increased exposure through masking and air purifiers, changing your clothes, and showering
- Get to cleaner indoor air if you can, or if possible travel (sometimes a short drive visible on air quality apps, like as of this post 2 hours west of the catastrophic levels in Chicago is clean air. Sometimes even 10 minutes of driving can get you somewhere better)
- Hydrate, while you can’t fully flush out smoke, you can give your body the best chance overall to mitigate the damage
- Ibuprofen and other anti-inflammatory remedies can help with pain but don’t reduce your exposure
- This is survivable. It is sad on a personal, community and global level, but you can survive this.

The Air Quality Index Scale (AQI) is NOT linear, but rather a calculated semi-linear figure. AQI 600 is ~7x worse than 150, not 4 times worse. https://www.airnow.gov/aqi/aqi-calculator/ shows that 25 AQI, well within healthy range, has 4 parts of PM 2.5. At AQI 150, the concentration is 55.4 parts of PM 2.5, Thats around 13 times worse, despite only 6x higher of a number. Parts of the country have passed 600 AQI, at 672 for example, there are over 400 parts of PM 2.5 per cubic meter. Want to help others stuck in this wildfire smoke?

The learning curve on smoke is high, you’ll see many people being exposed and potentially unaware. You will not be able to help everyone.

From our street distribution experience, people will take masks and wear them if you offer them and show them the air quality levels on your phone, or just point out the sky condition is from toxic wildfire smoke.

Doing distribution increases your exposure. In the past we did long outdoor volunteer shifts that felt heroic and rewarding but the catharsis is not worth the damage to your lungs. Do short shifts, involve more people, take breaks, and remember your car is not a clean air space, just slightly better than outside.

Tell people about what you are doing, ask for help. Be prepared for slow days and the occasional viral moment where you burst at the seams. Get more masks if you can, but get info out there too. And people on the street always need more food and water, especially when affluent pedestrian traffic decreases. Use venmo/cashapp or donation links to pool funds.

Work with local groups that you know regularly reach vulnerable people (seniors, homeless, disabled folks) and get them info, masks, and purifiers. Spread the word about groups you trust doing good work.

Be careful. This problem is not going away. We need your passion and interest for the long haul.

Not sure yet. We are making this post sharing info. We are not currently maintaining an inventory or standing funds to buy large amounts of N95s.

The struggles of unhoused and undocumented people are more interconnected than you know. An estimated 10% of unhoused Angelenos are undocumented. While ICE kidnaps people off our streets every day, city officials continue to sweep encampments and enforce anti-camping laws.

On March 24 and 25, 2021, Councilmember Mitch O'Farrell ordered the militarized eviction of the community that made Echo Park Lake their home for 18 months. O'Farrell is gone, but the eviction's violent legacy of criminalization and displacement continues in his former district and beyond.
