I've been talking a lot about the disastrous recent loss of American institutional capacity regarding climate science. But today, I'd like to announce something we've been working on, quietly, in the meantime to offer a lifeline to some of those affected. [Thread]
Just remembered this 2021 study about how PM 2.5 from Wildfires may be worse than other forms of PM 2.5. (which would be an indication our Air Quality Index system is overstating what's safe to breathe when it comes to wildfire smoke) www.nature.com/articles/s41...
Wildfire smoke impacts respiratory health more than fine particles from other sources: observational evidence from Southern California - Nature Communications
Recent toxicological studies suggest that wildfire particulate matter may be more toxic than equal doses of ambient PM2.5. Here, the authors show that even for similar exposure levels, PM2.5 from wild...

I hereby halt your doom scroll to show you this natural phenomenon known as a Light Pillar on a ski run in Austria. Kind of feels like you're being visited by god.
in an age of slop, remember to tune into something hopeful, clear and insightful. follow your heart. the tendrils of grief become curiosity. we need you not just when you are achieving or activist, but when you are resting, teary, and full of wonder.

A succession of heatwaves and very dry conditions - both driven by human-induced climate change, fueld the severe wildfires in Spain and France - new @wwattribution.bsky.social study www.worldweatherattribution.org/climate-chan...
AQI absolutely brutal in western Sonoma County (Sebastopol, Occidental) from the Woodside Fire, near Salt Point State Park.
Smoke from the Woodside fire in Sonoma visible at sunset in the East Bay.
No leaving the windows open to cool down the house tonight! #woodsidefire #sonomacountyb #healdsburg
Why is smoke from #WoodsideFire in Sonoma County so bad from a small blaze? Winds are being channeled through the Russian River and Petaluma Gap, bringing smoke to the Hwy 101 corridor. A shallow marine layer ~1,500ft w/ hot air above cold air prevents smoky winds from mixing w/ the free atmosphere
Now 143 acres. Very very high AQI (1000+) in the surrounding area, and worsening air quality across Sonoma County.
Notable NorCal fire: 50+ acre #WoodsideFire is burning in heavy timber between Hwy 1 & Pacific Ocean & has forced some evacuations in western Sonoma County. It is wind driven (25 gust 35mph) in moderately dry heavy fuels despite mild temps/moderate humidity. Smoke widely visible.
So frustrating seeing wishy washy public health messaging like this. When air is at hazardous levels: AVOID outdoors USE air purifiers WEAR a mask Do or do not, there is no try!
This is possibly the worst and widest spread smoke event in N American history and Mask Oakland has some good info and tools.

Extreme wildfire smoke hits US and Canada. Here's our tiny California wildfire smoke org's advice from 9 years of watching and responding. (slides 1-4 of 8) #wildfiresmoke #canadawildfires #airquality #NewYork #Chicago #Toronto
I am not a climate scientist but when I was a kid the number of times we couldn’t go outside because of Canadian wildfire smoke was zero times
AQI in Lower Manhattan, New York is at 297. Over 300 means air quality is at hazardous levels. Stay inside if you can, and please wear a high quality mask if you have to go outside.
Woah. It’s raining ashes due to wildfire smoke in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Source: www.threads.com/@michiganuns...
Chicago has the worst air of any major city in the world right now. 402 is extremely high. #WildfireSmoke from the fires in Canada are the source for 5 of the top 7 worst air in major cities right now.
So far this year we've had: the warmest winter on record in the mountain west, a record-shattering heat wave in Europe, once in a thousand year rainfall and flooding texas and forest fire smoke blanketing the mid west and the north east. Feels like something's going on with the climate!
Everyone in Canada and Northern US going outside today

Les feux qui ravagent l’Ontario sont tellement importants qu’ils enfument tout le nord-est de l’Amérique. Il est déconseillé de sortir a New York ou Chicago aujourd’hui tellement l’air est toxique
Severe drought conditions combined with heat in Canada and the US have created “a perfect storm for really dry conditions to provide a lot of fuel for these wildfires to burn,” says climate scientist @dwesty.bsky.social of @lamont.columbia.edu. Via @apnews.com. https://bit.ly/3SWJGEz
Heavy smoke from wildfires blankets the US Midwest and Northeast, prompting evacuations
