What is this bullshit? Conflict is definitely not absent in only-child families. You just decide on an adult to fight with instead and get far too much attention which turns you into a monster (me).

The "gift" phrasing misses something else, too: When people frame siblings as gifts and being an only child as a deficit, they discount what many only-child families told me they've experienced: the joy that can come from having a small, tight-knit family where jealousies and conflicts are mostly absent, and parents' time and attention are undivided.
