Tory MPs tonight seem genuinely enraged that Andy Burnham's new cabinet includes some slightly left of centre figures & bewilderment that he hasn't given a job to Liz Truss.

I’m upset that Mahmood stays in post but I’m not going to write Burnham off entirely based on this one decision. Not today anyway. Starmer outsourced policy entirely to his cabinet & I don’t think that will be Burnham’s style so I’m hoping that we’re going to see a different Mahmood under him???

Starmer has ben in with the king for a while. What if he accepted Starmer’s resignation & then collapsed & died before Burnham arrived? How long before the new PM could be sworn in? Would we be without a PM until William is coronated?

I don’t know what’s going to happen. Burnham could flame out Truss-style in a few weeks. Or he could turn out to be Britain’s most transformative Prime Minister in decades. Most likely: somewhere in between. So ends my analysis.

Karl Turner on LBC stated that Keir Starmer was considered to be very left wing by the Bar. Maybe that's been the problem. Maybe the members of the Bar shouldn't be considered the most reliable judges of where the political centre is?

Farage thinks winning an election in a single, friendly constituency will absolve him of all crimes and misdemeanours. Presumably then, if he loses (to a man with a bin on his head,) we can skip all of the standards and criminal investigations into him and skip straight to sentencing him as guilty?

This point needs to be made over and again: The main purpose of wealth taxes should not be to raise revenue. That's a small and secondary benefit. The main purpose should be to *reduce the fortunes of the ultrarich*. Why? Because those fortunes present a massive threat to democracy and public life.

Again, I beg MPs and the government to actually look at the policy they may or may not be implementing and think through both the human consequences and their willingness to have 1/6 of all care staff be deported.

It's worth stressing that we have rules around political funding to protect our entire democracy. The voters of one constituency might be fine with their MP breaking those rules. But they can't release their MP from them, because a single MP on the take is a danger to the whole system.

Trump is like a video game hacker. He gets turned on by the cheating. The point is not just to win but to win by breaking the rules & proving they don’t apply to you. The more egregious & outrageous the hack, the more upset & enraged your opponents, the bigger the win.

Seems the real problem centrist democrats are facing right now is the people are being very clear that they want leaders who will solve their biggest problems, and centrist democrats really don't want to solve their biggest problems and hate the people for wanting that. It's a real pickle for them.

I think Starmer genuinely believes that all that matters is delivery & that all this politics stuff is a trivial distraction. The trouble is it turns out that people quite want their politicians to do a bit of politics every now & then.
