One Year of Occupation: Justice for DC's Students and Schools — Free DC

DC has been under a hostile military occupation for nearly an entire year, and for 11 days in August we are telling the story of the ways Trump’s occupation has hurt our communities. August 5: “Ju...

The neo-Nazi ICE goons that @mayorbowser.dc.gov collaborates with are targeting the DC Bilingual elementary school. This morning, they conducted their third abduction during school drop off time in front of the children #bigballsgoonshow

There’s a difference between a big donor driven campaign and a movement driven by a deep coalition. @janeese4dc.bsky.social has captured the hearts + energy of so many caring Washingtonians ready for a government that puts people first. 3 weeks left. All gas, no breaks! Through the finish line.

Alex Koma@alexkoma.bsky.social · 3mo ago

New: @janeese4dc.bsky.social just released an internal poll showing her up by 14 in the mayoral race: her lead stays at 12 even when they run a RCV simulation. This is quite the change from the public poll of the race, but I will say I’ve heard rumors of private polls with similar results.

1,900 DC resident donors for @janeese4dc.bsky.social vs 836 for @kenyanmcduffie.bsky.social tells you just about all you need to know about this race. Those 1,900 are votes, not just $. And people who will tell their family, friends and neighbors. The people of DC vs. the power of outside interests.

The D.C. mayoral arms race continues: Over the last month @janeese4dc.bsky.social reports raising $133k from more than 2,100 donors (1,900 D.C. residents), while @kenyanmcduffie.bsky.social got $140k from 1,050 contributors (836 D.C. residents). JLG has $873k in bank, McDuffie $1.1 million. (But...)

Bowser got well earned boos (and later Free DC chants) from HU students throughout a commencement address almost entirely about herself. Deserved for a mayor whose policies have been nothing short of cruel to DC’s most vulnerable.Time for people first leadership we can be proud of. Time for Janeese!

I graphed DC Democratic mayoral candidates’ responses to the C4DC education questionnaire. The answers (and who didn’t answer) are telling. Support for structural changes:

🧵Some local Dems seem to have a mythology that Dems don't support raising taxes on wealthy if economic times are tough. Not only is this false- the idea that raising taxes on the well-off when others aren't doing well is an effective way to stimulate econ growth IS liberal economics. A thread...

It’s shameful the way we are treating young people in DC. I went to HS football games every Friday; DC kids can't go without a chaperone. I went the mall to hang out; DC kids can't go to DCUSA without an adult. They can't enter Navy Yard wihout a military interview. It’s just wrong.

Mayor: the city is NOT broke. Jenny Reed: DC always collects way more money than we project! CFO: but I have bad vibes therefore I will just hold back tons of cash we could use for critical human services (which isn’t within my legal authority) bc I be worrrrriiieeeed!

NEWS: Today @mayorbowser.dc.gov unveils her proposed 2027 budget. It's $12.7 billion, a 3.3% decrease from last year. As expected, there are cuts to a key child care fund, as well as a paid leave program, and affordable housing. Healthcare for low-income residents is spared, though.

By the way, this is what a “ramped up” campaign looks like in case anyone is taking notes. Canvasses all across the city, phone banks, dance party fundraiser, debates… a campaign built to respect and engage the voters it’s asking to serve.

Janeese4DC@janeese4dc.bsky.social · 6mo ago

Are y’all ready? We have a fun lineup of ways to get involved in the campaign this weekend. You can register through the link in our bio for any of them.

VO, Goodweather, and Jack Evans all are saying kids in DC's public and charter schools need more testing and assessments, even in PK. Evans also says we wouldn't be in this current budget situation if he was still on Council.

CNN reporting that the strikes on Iran tonight are joint US and Israeli strikes. Which means Donald Trump should be impeached for a third time. What he has done tonight is illegal under the US constitution and the UN charter.

Why are 13 % of all ICE agents in a city with such a small population? 1: target blue city where people & govt will resist 2: purposely foment mass civil unrest through brutality against population 3: Claim those resisting brutality are insurrections 4: Invoke Insurrection act 5: Cancel elections

Get me a mayor whose achievements are making DC more equitable, affordable, inclusive, safe, & just. A mayor who can say all public schools improved. A mayor who can demonstrate historic environmental protections & investments. Get me a mayor who we end up calling Governor. #DCStatehood

Muriel Bowser, who helped make DC the vibrant city it is, kept the Capitals and Wizards from leaving, lured back the Commanders, navigated Trump's attacks and offered steady leadership in turbulent times, opts not to run for a fourth term. @campbellnyt.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2025/11/25/u...

Couldn’t agree more that serious times demand a serious leader. Having a mayor that doesn’t understand the gravity of throwing her own people under the bus to submit to a fascist regime - and then pretend she isn’t- is deeply alarming. Time for new leadership.

Alex Koma@alexkoma.bsky.social · 9mo ago

Some 2026 intrigue: There's a new effort to "draft" Mayor Muriel Bowser to run for a fourth term backed by Opportunity DC, the political group assembled by the Federal City Council/other business interests. "One more time!" urges the petition on the site: draftmurielbowser.com

Democrats in Congress: Hold the line. Do not back these bills that jeopardize DC’s right to govern itself. DC is a testing ground for tactics that MAGA will try across the country. Vote NO, and focus on helping struggling families afford health care.

Martin Austermuhle@maustermuhle.bsky.social · 9mo ago

This week the House is set to vote on two bills targeting D.C.'s criminal justice laws. One would repeal a 2020 city law that imposed new training, discipline, and disclosure standards on police. The other would bring cash bail back to D.C. 30 years after it was eliminated.

This shows what we've know: @mayorbowser.dc.gov cooperating w/a fascist regime yielding NOTHING. Sipping cocktails, taking directions, smiling w/ white supremacists...MPD still cooperating with ICE. Ntl Guard STILL in DC. Home rule can't be repealed w/o 60 Senators. Time for @janeese4dc.bsky.social!
