He does the obligatory eye-rolling, at first.

You know. The whole pfft and whatever and nah, not for me mate. All the things he’s preconditioned to say when he’s terrified of trying something new and being absolutely dogshit at it.

(Ed's still learning how to sit with himself. A post-canon exploration of mindfulness, self-acceptance, and hyperfixating on a new hobby. And love, always 💕)

The listlessness isn’t out of the ordinary, not one little bit, but Ed never expected to feel it here.

His palms itch with it, itch something fierce, but no matter where Ed scratches, no matter how hard, he’s never able to find the itch. It takes refuge in his bones, burrows down deep in the marrow of him where Ed can’t reach. It makes him drum his fingers and joggle his knee when he’s alone. It makes him pick at his fingernails and chew the inside of his lip to ribbons of white, peeling scar tissue; so bad that Stede notices that kissing has a new texture, a new sort of salinity. He pulls back from Ed’s mouth with soft, troubled eyes and goes ‘sweetheart, what’ve you done to yourself?’, and it feels like being run through.

The problem is not Stede. Ed cannot stress this enough. He’s certain this had been the general consensus amongst a decent portion of the crew as they’d sailed away. He’s never heard any of them say it aloud, but Read’s diatribe still sits acrimoniously in his brain, no matter how he’d scoffed and snorted about it at the time. The mystery? Gone. The magic? In the wind - Ed’s sure that same sentiment must be echoed among the crew. Eventually, your charms'll lose impact and become annoyances.

Skill issue, thinks Ed. Sucks to suck. Especially at something as easy as love.

The problem is not Stede.

Stede helps Ed to patch up all the holes in the walls, even though his workmanship is shoddy at best (downright bewildering at worst - Ed finds himself staring, agog, at the absolute shambles he’s made of the bedroom windowsill, before deadpanning: “First day having hands, kinda nervous.” Stede had laughed so hard he’d choked on his own spit.).

Stede makes Ed perfect cups of tea, expertly sugared, even when it means going without sugar himself. It doesn’t matter how much Ed protests about this: he will not allow Ed to go sugarless. Ed’s had more than enough unsweetened days, he says, and Stede won’t be the one to serve up any more bitterness. Ed c…

This, Stede notes despairingly, is where the realism grinds to a halt.

Skye’s still in her whole mermaid-unicorn-fairy phase, bless her. Part of Stede hopes she’ll never outgrow it; her wide-eyed, unshakeable belief in all things glittery and magical.

But good grief, could she just give it a rest today? For just five minutes?

“So,” Stede ventures, peering over her wrist as she draws. “I mean wow, that is. Certainly a lot of hair he’s got there!”

“Yep,” says Skye. Her gaze is focused and determined, and she does not look up from her paper.

“Are we…are we sure it goes all the way down to the floor like that?” Stede asks delicately, careful not to offend the artist at work.

“Yep.”

“And it’s…wavy? All, um…princessy, the way you’ve drawn it?”

“Yep. And it’s twinkly silver.”

Stede cocks an eyebrow in thinly-veiled disbelief.

“...Twinkly silver?”

“Yep.”

“And. Well, I hate to interrupt the process here. I can see you're rather, uh…locked in. But I do have a question about his eyes.”

“Yep?”

“I mean, it’s just… they’re the size of basketballs, are they not? They’re…Skye, you’ve drawn them so big they’re hanging halfway off his face.”

He doesn’t mean to sound so critical. He really doesn’t.

Skye, thankfully, is so engrossed in the task at hand that she doesn’t register Stede’s tone one bit.

“Yep,” she says again, more definitively than any yep to date.

#WIPWednesday anyone? Here's a bit of the original romance I've been working on this year.

There’s a crisp anticipation in the air at the foot of the trail, an earthy-fragrant unraveling that hints at the approach of spring. The bracing chill feels good on Tess’ face and she breathes in the mellow scent of dormant plants shrugging off hibernation. She’s so glad to be outside, away from home.

Above them, the mesa rises like a sun-dappled promise, sandstone steps winding toward an endless cornflower sky. It’s the kind of majesty that makes her wonder why people bother living anywhere else, a perfect kernel of heaven at their doorstep.

Sagebrush is an easier trail than the Brandywine Loop, challenging enough for a good workout, not so difficult that she’ll have to plan a day of recovery around it. It’s a mile up the town’s northernmost mesa to an overlook of the rolling scrubland beyond Juniper’s border. On the interior side of the flattop peak is a solid view of The Grove Resort and the loosely-clustered development of luxury homes around it. The neighborhood is more manicured and sedate than Tess would ever feel comfortable living in, but it paints a pretty picture from a distance.

They launch into the hike at a steady pace, Beatriz in front, intermittently looking back to check on Tess’ progress. She keeps her promise to take it easy, reigning in her pace whenever conversation becomes strained from Tess’ trailing distance or labored breath. They’re not alone on the trail, but manage a healthy separation from other groups coming and going. Beatriz asks her about the reading, and Tess manages a diplomatic answer that doesn’t touch on any after hours excursions. She divorces herself from the chaotic tumble of emotions surrounding the entire night as she recounts a bland description of the event.

“So you liked this author? I know sometimes you get a dud.”

“Yes, Juliet is lovely,” she says honestly. Lovely and fierce and deeply passionate. And probably in need of an apology of some sort. Grimly, she admits maybe they’re both due one.

Tess doesn’t know what she would say, how to even start to address the colossal mess of last night, but she hates where they left things. Before it had all collapsed, Tess was starting to think of Juliet as a friend, someone she’d like to keep knowing.

“She handled the questions really well. Her parents are these bigwig Hollywood people—a writer and producer, I think?” Juliet hadn’t exactly said the phrase ‘nepo baby’ during their discussion at the bar, but casual references to Oscar nominations and A-list aunties painted a pretty clear picture. “I get the impression she has some media experience from them.”

Not that the polish she’d shown during the reading had carried through her alcohol-soaked tirade at the end of their evening. Still, the loose tongue, the vein of entitlement that had permeated her jealousy, could maybe be explained by a uniquely pampered upbringing.

“Oh, fancy! Hollywood,” Beatriz intones. “I remember her photo from the shop. Young black woman, right? I can definitely see the LA influence with all those piercings.”

“Yeah, she’s unique. Extraordinary writer.” Unbidden, she blurts, “She’s gay.”

She has no idea why she says it, what alien tongue forces the words from her mouth. It’s an impulse she can’t resist, some essential piece of information that feels urgent to share.

“Oh yeah?” Beatriz says, unfazed. “I guess that makes sense. Her book is a lesbian romance, right?”

“Yeah. Historical.” Tess honestly doesn’t know where the book falls on the spectrum of lesbian, queer, or sapphic literature, but it feels like a detail that might be of distinct importance to learn. “She brought a cool crowd into the shop. Lots of interesting faces.”

Stop it. Jesus Christ she needs to stop talking.

Next she’ll be recounting stories about all the lesbians she met at the queer bar she went to in the midst of a sapphic sexual crisis.

“Nice. I’m glad it went well.” Beatriz scrambles up a sloping outcrop, nimble as a mountain goat. “Hey, have you finished this month’s book yet? I don’t know how to feel about the talking octopus—I can’t tell if I’m supposed to take it seriously or not.”

And just like that, they move on. The door Tess unthinkingly cracked open drifts silently closed, and she’s saved from further rumination. A part of her is grateful Beatriz has the emotional intuition of a tub of yogurt. The same part of her determined to ignore a creeping feeling of disappointment.
