Marine scientist, GIS teacher. Likes #rstats, knitting, cooking + baking!

Enjoying the plenaries at #ICRS2026. Covering the range of reef science here are some highlights: Paul Kench - reef islands are dynamic systems and other marine carbonates like Halimeda and clams make up a small portion of these islands.

Prof Paul Kench stands on the main stage at the New Zealand International Convention Centre behind a lecturn with a large slide of an aerial photo of a reef island highlighting sediment supply.

I was "first in best dressed" at the #ICRS2026 first poster session and had some great discussions about coral geochemistry 🪸 My poster is number 22 and will take it down this evening if anyone wants to check out some preliminary elemental data from a coral core.

Catherine Kim stands in front of her ICRS poster pinned on a black board. She is smiling at the camera wearing the light teal conference lanyard and wearing a black knit dress.

A whirlwind start to #ICRS2026 with a beautiful welcome to the New Zealand International Convention Centre by Iwi kāinga at this brand new facility - we're the 10th conference to be here in beautiful Auckland!

Tired of rerunning everything every time you change a line of code? 😩 The {targets} package automates your #Rstats workflow—only running what’s needed, tracking dependencies, keeping your analysis reproducible & efficient. ⏩ books.ropensci.org/targets/ #RStats #ReproducibleResearch #DataPipelines

I'll be helping to facilitate tonight's action hour! If you're wondering how to get involved in the #SummerFightForScience, this is a great 1st step. If you want to meet other folks who care & take an easy advocacy action, this is also great (no long-term commitment necessary). #StandUpForScience

🚨 ICE disappeared a woman on Wednesday night. She was grabbed by men in plainclothes and taken to an unidentified location. ICE is refusing to say where she is being held. It’s 72 hours later and not even a dedicated team of lawyers can find her. This is WRONG. We can’t let this be the new norm.

In the Netherlands, nearly half of train journeys begin with a bike trip, giving the Dutch train station a unique look. Rather than large car parking lots, there are hundreds and hundreds of bicycles parked.

Ok so yeah, this has quickly become the #1 misunderstanding about the canceled grants the grants are not “subsidies” or “entitlements” to Harvard or Princeton or whatever they aren’t going into universities’ endowments they are competitive contracts won by these universities to do research

Maya Sen@mayasen.bsky.social · last yr.

There is a PR narrative quickly emerging about “entitlement” of elite universities, as if this $ is some sort of subsidy Harvard & others must counter this quickly The $ doesn’t flow into Harvard’s coffers - this is grant money, most of which goes to research the govt has agreed has social value
