I had to highlight this tribute to Mamoru Oshii's live action film "Stray Dogs - Keberos Panzer Cops" in the new animated movie "Patlabor EZY - File 1". They literally recreated almost all of the shots from the original 1991 trailer.

It always annoys me that motorcycle development nearly went down the path that would have eventually resulted in real-life Akira motocycles with car-like feet-forward seating, hub center steering, and long wheelbases. The Ner-A-Car was a 1920's premonition of a future that never came.

The Ner-A-Car was produced from 1921 to 1927.Kaneda's bike from Akira. Set in 2019, the world still doesn't have motorcycles like this. The closest thing since the Ner-A-Car would probably have been the Yamaha GTS1000 of 1993.

Growing up on the west coast probably resulted in a slightly different experience but as a young kid during the 90s very much into anime, people who disliked it were either convinced it was creepy porno shit or were overtly racist.

I think folks also underestimate just how culturally sheltered or silo'ed people were before the internet blew up. People who hated anime had of course barely seen any and were just going on sensationalized second-hand impressions. This fell away when more anime slowly got easier and easier to see.

You can argue the unusual 1:1 adaption style of the new Ghost in the Shell doesn’t work, but after decades of adaptions that strip mined his comics for ideas while implicitly ignoring the idiosyncrasies that made his manga so great… I think it’s cool.

Hand printing labels for my next resin kit using an old Riso Gocco hand printer. Riso made these for the Japanese market for household projects like making custom news years cards and I’ve read that at one point like 1/4 of all Japanese households had one. Messy and imprecise, they’re neat.

Enjoying the new GitS series because of how slavishly it's trying to reproduce Shirow's manga on screen. Not sure if that's a good thing in terms of making a comprehensible show, but I'm glad someone is trying it for the first time since... Black Magic? The music doesn't work at all, though.
