BildBildBildRest in peace, my dear friend.

Karen Clark was the kindest of souls - how fortunate l am that our paths crossed in life, and to have called her a beloved friend, mentor; Queer elder.

During her 38 years in the Legislature as a State Rep from the Southside, she always uplifted the marginalized and vulnerable, as a tireless pursuer of justice in all its forms. Today, we can credit her for passing marriage equality, stronger worker rights, environmental protections, and the first state-law in the nation to ban discrimination against trans people.

At a young age, she dug into anti-war organizing, galvanizing the queer community, and as a nurse, expanding healthcare. Eventually, she was convinced to run for office by her community. An organizer at heart, Karen worked fend off corporate polluters.

I met Karen while organizing with EPNI as Community Outreach Director; we quickly became friends. Together, we advocated at the Legislature to fund the East Phillips Urban Farm project & for an Amortization Bill to shutter polluters in residential neighborhoods. It was during those long nights at the Capitol that she taught me the legislative process.

She was always in my corner, encouraging & supporting me, and was thrilled to learn I had landed a job in the Senate. I will forever cherish our long phone calls, her boundless wisdom and invaluable advice, her sweet impromptu voicemails to check in, surprise visits to her farmers market stand, and her hugs.

Karen was a trailblazer and beacon of hope. In her own words, "Resistance in a very strong form is what we need right now; we're gonna need it for a while.
We need to have hope. Hope is probably one of the most revolutionary; radical things we can do, with that, change is possible."

One of Minnesota's greatest organizers and public servants, her life's work shows another world is possible - if we organize for it. We'll follow in her footsteps by recommitting ourselves to making the world a better place for posterity.

We honor the life and legacy of our beloved friend, Former State Representative Karen Joy Clark 🌻 Karen dedicated her life to making Minnesota a better place and has left a lasting impact on Minnesota for generations to come. We are deeply grateful & indebted for her service.
