Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

Five-foot Carmen Miranda, making a great case for why "hazard pay" should have been part of her salary for appearing in all those 20th Century Fox musicals. #carmenmiranda #20thecenturyfox #shoes #platformshoes #thegirlinthetuttifruttihat

The name of this playlist is hilarious 😂😂😂 the songs are 🔥🔥🔥🔥
If you recall Jean-Pierre Dorléac venomous tweets on Twitter about Classic Hollywood stars, Farran's deep dive into his past will be a welcome cup of tea. There's no paywall at the moment, so read it now. Or even better, sign up for her Substack so you can support her work.

This is sad news. The Wild Wild Rose is Carmen set in a Hong Kong nightclub and Grace Chang was amazing in it. Her jazzy version of Habanera is mesmerizing. And as a guitar guy, I'd love to know where she got that National guitar. It was made around 1930 and they are very scarce.

It's been reported that Grace Chang, Hong Kong's preeminent Mandarin screen diva of the 50s, passed away this afternoon, one day shy of her 93rd birthday. Watch Mambo Girl and The Wild, Wild Rose to see her at the height of her powers.
Kathleen Sully's Skrine opens with the title character killing a woman for a pack of cigarettes. He finds just one—and no matches. The grim, raw power of this post-apocalyptic novel places it among some of the bleakest, most nihilistic in all literature. neglectedbooks.com/?...
Hey look, it’s my latest lino print, The Devil at Stanton Drew! 🔥 Very much inspired by a folk tale surrounding the neolithic standing stones at the Somerset village of Stanton Drew. 🔥 This print will go live at 12 00 (GMT) on Friday 31st July... 👁️ slipperyjack.bigcartel.com

Mr. Ghost Goes to Town is a swinging song with some great harmonies by the 5 Jones Boys that tells the tale of a specter that wants to Shake his bones/ To hot saxophones. And really, who can blame him? #SpookySunday

I love this banjo picking ghost. The best part for me is that the ghost is playing a Boucher banjo, which has that unmistakable scroll-shaped peghead. I like the way the shape of the peghead is echoed in the ghost’s shroud.
Okay, the first prompt for #AuGhost26 was "any & all ghosts" which is a freebie for today since I hadn't made the prompt list yet But it was the perfect opportunity to make this one for @selmerguy.bsky.social who specifically requested a ghost playing the banjo So, here's a 👻 playing a 🪕 😈🎨🦇

That shadowy place way out there? That is beyond our borders. You must never go there. That is the Big Boy graveyard.
@arkhamlibrarian.bsky.social The thrills and Detection are all well and good, but a peek inside the Vaults of the Bodleian are why I’d buy this book.
Another great Gollancz cover - love how it builds in intensity from 'Thrills!' to 'The vaults of the Bodleian!'
People just don’t write songs promoting roller derby like they used to.
I start a small museum devoted to the patent zithers created by the Marxochime Company of New Troy, Michigan. They are both weird and wonderful.
If you could open a small 2-room museum, who or what would you dedicate it to?
These amazing ads aren’t about beer, but cider is pub-adjacent so I think you’ll get a kick out of them. @raynewman.bsky.social @lisagrimm.com
Do you love vintage cider adverts as much as we do? These Whiteway's advertising cards from the late 1920s-30s are some of our favourites stored in the museum's archive.

@slipperyjack.bsky.social I’m chuffed to get my copy of Tales Accursed that has been professionally defaced by Richard Wells with an illustration of the standing stones at Avebury. The book came wrapped in paper printed with an excerpt from No Man’s Land, a handwritten receipt and a postcard.

🧵Wherever I go I can always find a new ghost story… Today I’m sat here at Salisbury Train Station and I started chatting to one of the guards. Omg! 😦 This place has A LOT going on. 👻 One story is that of a fireman, one of the tragic deaths in the 1906 Salisbury Train Disaster which killed 28.
