Irrational optimist, wild hoper.

new secretary of labor just dropped. he’s “employer-friendly”. not sure how he feels about employees, but i could guess! the way things are headed feels like workers are going to have to start paying their employers for the privilege of having a job.

Senate confirms insider Keith
Sonderling to lead Department of Labor
By Helen Huiskes - 09/30/26 11:28 PM EDT
The Senate voted 47-41 Wednesday night to confirm Keith Sonderling, acting Secretary of Labor, to the post permanently - filling a seat in President Trump's cabinet that has been officially empty since April.
All Republicans present voted for Son-derling's nomination, and all Democrats voted against it, but the nomination only needed a majority to succeed. Twelve senators missed the vote, as the chamber is likely to recess Thursday until after the midterm elections.Sonderling is seen as generally employer friendly. Neil Bradley, executive vice president and chief policy officer at the Chamber of Commerce, released a statement in favor of confirming Sonderling on Tuesday.
"As demonstrated during his confirmation hearing and throughout his career, Mr. Sonderling is a highly qualified nominee whose leadership and vision will ensure the Department of Labor continues to uphold its mission while fostering economic growth and job creation,"
Bradley wrote.
During his recent confirmation hearing in July, Democrats questioned him over his past moves at the Labor department
- such as rolling back a Biden-era rule granting more workers access to overtime pay - while taking the chance to register their discontent with the state of the economy under the Trump adminis-tration.
"I fear any vote to confirm you is for more of the same: to strip overtime protections for our workers, to undercut our unions and to let giant corporations get away with robbery, literally," Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) said at the hearing.

Chicagoland friends, I have a favor to ask. I have a pro bono client, a Black woman, who is currently facing charges for allegedly pointing a gun at her abusive ex - who admitted to raping her. I would love if there could be a show of support for her at her next few court dates.

Turns out, the U.S. Department of Labor has some things to say about what counts as volunteering and what doesn't. So I took a deep dive into labor law and what it might mean for contributors and businesses in the open source ecosystem. sereed.media/for-love-or-money-open-source-labor-law-problem

For Love or Money: Open Source's Labor Law Problem

Open source software runs on volunteer contributor labor. But U.S. labor law has rules about volunteering, no matter what it's called. Does open source have a labor law problem?

I made a tool that makes websites the way I fell in love with making websites long ago, and @sophiewhirly.bsky.social helped me work through some of the links and PLAYED with me 🤩

For the past weekish, I've been building a new website. It's live now, and it's everything I loved from Web 1.0 with a tasteful color story. I was totally lost until @russetpomme.bsky.social decided to volunteer me to try out her new website builder. Yup. SHE MADE THE THING THAT MAKES THE WEBSITE.

so FYI: the AI writing “it’s not x, it’s y” thing isn’t a recent quirk. it’s a reflection of its model. it happens because the llms are eliminating and refining responses, literally cycling through dimensions of “it’s not this, it’s that” in order to find its response. cc @heritage.bsky.social

The NYPL Digital Collections API is being quietly sunsetted in August. The only announcement I can find is behind the dev login for API access. When I look for more info, all that's returned is articles from 2012-2016 announcing this leap forward in public info access. Anyone know anything?

A screenshot of the top of the api.repo.nypl.org page showing the announcement: "The Repo API is being deprecated and will no longer be available starting August 1st, 2026. No public API replacement is planned at this time. If you have any questions or concerns, contact us digitaldam@nypl.org."

BREAKING: We're challenging President Trump's executive order that aims to restrict mail-in voting. Once again, the president is trying to seize power he doesn't have at the expense of our democracy.

It’s wild that you can just openly bribe the President of the United States with chunks of gold to get whatever you want, it’s fine, you don’t have to hide it, just say “I am bribing the President with gold,” zero consequences.

Jesus: Okay, no more forgiveness, Father, they know what they are doing and they are still doing it! Noah: Yeah, man, I told you they always miss the boat. Moses: Look, fellas, it’s about the journey, not the destination.
