A Bank Holiday crowd of over 20,000 - all but a handful seemingly wearing straw boaters - watched Surrey score 505 for 6 v Nottinghamshire at The Oval, August 4th 1913. No batsman scored a hundred but the top six all made fifties. A year to the day later Britain declared war on Germany

Heading home after seeing Arcadia at the Duke of York’s in London. Marvellous. Not sure how long the run is but would strongly recommend, worth it for the “We shed as we pick up speech” alone.

this was a total surprise to me. twitter is a sort of dumpster in which evidently increasingly mainstream media rummages for the flotsam & jetsam of pseudo-news. quoting people instead of inviting them to write a serious, thoughtful prose piece & paying them a modest fee has become common.

I love that @theguardian.com put the whole @joycecaroloates.bsky.social vs. Wilson thing in the main news section of Friday’s paper.

Screenshot of a page from The Guardian showing a scene from The Odyssey, a picture of Joyce Carol Oates and the headline…

Oates calls out 'crude' criticism of Nolan's Odyssey by translator

In the 1960s and 70s Ladybird found it really hard to keep their ‘transport’ books up-to-date. ‘Motor Cars’ had to be adapted and re-written 6 times between 1960 and 1972.

A group of six different ladybird Motor Car books in the ‘transport recognition’ series. Some of the books are open and others closed but all are different with different cars and different styling.

Not hopeful for success in today's auction of Noggin the Nog orginal artwork. Morning starts with Ivor the Engine and first lot has gone for £,1500 which is not ludicrous but still way above my sightlines.

I love it when #shedoftheyear makes it into industry & trade publications, a great crossover of the "Shed" world and work life. The other week it was gardening this week it's Fishing fishingnews.co.uk/this-weeks-i... ok they the dates wrong (It's closed already) but we love trade press!

Some years ago, Liberty London stocked a wallpaper based on the Ladybird book ‘Trees’ - and SR Badmin’s stunning illustrations. It was too expensive for me then, and you can’t get it now. But it was rather lovely
