One thing to remember as we talk global temperatures this year and next: The baseline (where you expect the temperature to be near) is the plate. Climate change is the three-layer cake (the warming that we've baked in). El Nino is the layer of frosting on top (the short-term added boost).

Per the latest monthly update from @berkeleyearth.org, 2026 is on track to be the SECOND hottest year of record GLOBALLY. REMINDER: 2025 was the third hottest year of record 2024 was THE HOTTEST year of record 2023 was the second hottest year of record /2

If a helpful summary: ❗5 of the last 5 years are all in the top 10 ❗10 of the last 16 years are in the top 10 On average, #bcstx has warmed 4.3°F since just the 1970s.

7 months in the books -- time to check in #bcstx. As of the end of July, 2026 checks in as the FOURTH WARMEST year-to-date in the 137-year record. #1: 2023 #2: 2017/2012 #3: 2011/1911 #4: 2026/1925 #5: 2020 #6: 2009 #7: 2022 #8: 2025 #9: 2024 #10: 1921

It's going to be a close call, but it now appears more likely than not that July 2026 will be the warmest month on record in the Contiguous U.S. As of today, we are essentially tied with July 1936 and July 2012. 🔥

As much as 5-10" of rain has fallen across eastern and central New York—including along the I-87 corridor and around Albany. Let's take a short walk through this weather event, making sure we put all the puzzle pieces together for this excessive rainfall event 🧵

#Genevieve underwent EXTREME Rapid Intensification this weekend -- gaining 70mph to jump it from a Cat 1 to a Cat 5 in just 24 hours (+40mph in just 12hrs). Feeding that intensity boost: ocean temps running ~3°F above average. 🔴Unusual warmth made at least 500x MORE likely by human-caused warming.

Sunday's all-time and near-record highs from the Rockies to the Plains—brought to you by the fingerprint of heat-trapping pollution. Highs between 95-105°F, made more likely by a warming atmosphere that's been showing up time & time again this summer. (It's as if something has changed 🤔)

Another thing you shouldn't blame on El Nino. Global coral bleaching. Btw, to understand the strength of this El Nino, do not use nino 3.4 temperatures. Use the Relative Oceanic Nino Index.

Climate Central@climatecentral.org · 2w ago

🪸New research led by #ClimateCentral finds that climate change — not El Niño — is driving coral bleaching worldwide. The study published in @tosoceanography.bsky.social shows that nearly every global bleaching event over the past 40 years would not have occurred without human-caused #ClimateChange.

I was curious how often heat warnings/advisories coincided with tropical storm warnings so reached out to @akrherz.bsky.social. This is the first time since at least 2008 that we've had concurrent tropical storm/heat warnings, but it's happened about a dozen times since 2008 for heat advisories.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in New Orleans may have summed up Bertha best today in their forecast discussion: "I for one have never seen a tropical storm warning and a heat advisory/warning for the same time frame in the same area. But here we are." My morning update ⬇️

Bertha Skims Across the Northern Gulf Coast with Little Fanfare

An unusual and contradictory mix of tropical storm warnings and extreme heat warnings follow Bertha’s path across the northern Gulf Coast today

🌙 From the Desert Southwest to the Southeast, over a dozen states started today with warmth that would be nearly impossible w/out the influence of heat-trapping pollution. Hot nights limit our ability to recover from brutal days—and that's when heat stress and illness rise.

It was a warm start to this Thursday across much of the Lone Star State. In fact, many Texans walked out to the WARMEST start to a July 23rd of record. For example: Austin. ABIA: 81. Camp Mabry: 82. Both top the record of 80 set in 2019 & tied in 2023 /1

Thermometer is expected to reach 100 across the Brazos Valley today. Humidty will make it FEEL LIKE 110+ While cooling storm chance this afternoon will be nice -- caution! Big heat + rapid air cooling = BIG 💨 Isolated 40-70mph gusts not ruled out where storms pass by 4pm - 8pm #txwx

Tuesday morning sunrise view of Tropical Storm #Bertha in the Northeast Gulf of Mexico. Storm is fighting northerly wind shear. leaving the center circulation fairly exposed. That's also pushing all of the t-storm activity to the south & southeast of the center. Wind 60mph. Jogging NNW @ 3mph

As of the early Monday evening update, hurricane hunters confirm #Bertha has officially formed in the northeast Gulf. Winds sustained @ 40mph. Northeast wind shear shoving most of the storm activity to the south of the center

Is it summer? Yes. Should it be hot? Sure. Should it be THIS hot? Not quite. In fact, climate change is making this kind at least 3x more likely for: • Monday: 52.2M Americans • Tuesday: 95.4M • Wednesday: 85.5M (and almost impossible w/out it for 65.2M!) (data: @climatecentral.org)
