When you look globally, there are many more countries that consistently abandoned street-running railways in the postwar years than ones that retained them. The simpler answer is that technology, decaying infras and the zeitgeist killed streetcars everywhere but in a bunch of countries.
I think the conspiracy is comforting to people -- "a few bad guys did this." The reality -- "electeds, planners, and most of the public believed that the car was the future and rail transit was outdated" is actually more unsettling since it raises the question of what we're getting wrong now.
After a 30 year hiatus, battery trains are back in regular service in central NRW: 🔋 since 1 July, the hourly RE47 service Düsseldorf - Remscheid-Lennep has been resurrected and Regiobahn is running it using two-car Siemens Mireo+B supplied by Smart Train Lease rental company

Public transport in the Ruhr be like: railway line through dense urban areas, unelectrified, uncomfortable DMUs, only hourly service possible, inadequate stations, terrible punctuality (only 52.1% punctual-within-4mins trains last year) and no concrete plans for any upgrades apart from maybe BEMUs
Google Translate now shows Bulgarian with this interesting alternative script/font that I have seen Bulgarian written in for a while. It's like handwritten Cyrillic (e.g. т looking like m) but on a computer/printed Anyone knows how and why Bulgarian often uses this instead of standard Cyrillic?
love to be contributing to the operational costs of this unsubsidised train with my 3.74€ fare (that's a whopping 0.009€/km) 🤔 (the train did become fuller later)
Neue Pläne im Innenministerium: Dobrindt will FragDenStaat ausschalten
Die Bundesregierung will das Informationsfreiheitsgesetz faktisch abschaffen. Interne Dokumente zeigen jetzt: Der Plan zielt explizit darauf, Anfragen über FragDenStaat unmöglich zu machen.

Hell is freezing over: my sister, who has been living dead in the middle of a 610,000 people city for three years, is taking the local public transport (an underground light rail) for the first time!! 🥳
Wozu haben wir die BEU eigentlich? Wenn man so wie jetzt bei Riedlingen die Unfälle untersucht dann kann man es doch auch gleich lassen.
I know we always admire Zürich HB's departure board, but this ain't so bad either
Branch line Saturday 😌 And what a better way to connect two dead-end branch lines by 'cycling' between them using a draisine on a disused line 🚲🙂
These studies are certainly interesting: very detailed from status quo numbers, developing different stages of Takt introduction, down to how a new Takt timetable should be marketed. Also found this book from 1981 discussing history of Takt timetables and the various planning stages of Swiss Takt
And more news: for the weekends everything is back to normal for us. All our trains on the weekends will only run with two tiny diesel units again. Reason: Régiolis is too expensive to use, once again, the French apparently want too much money and Baden - Württemberg doesn’t want to pay that.
21st century infrastructure finally in the old soviet sleeping districts! These are not simple bicycle path projects - they revitalize the entire public space! So happy to see projects I worked on being realized!

Nothing says “this insurance company knows my country” than using an AI generated map of Belgium that puts Ghent in Wallonie, gives us two Namurs and a south coast on the Med.
Breaking news: when the Hochrheinbahn reopens in December next year, the (second-hand) electric trains will be operated by SWEG and not by the previous operator, DB Regio! (in addition to the new SBB-operated express that didn't exist previously) vm.baden-wuerttemberg.de/de/service/p...

Small trip to travel on the Hochrheinbahn a last time before electrification so that I can have a before and after. The project also sees two new stations, full rebuild of all existing ones, and two new crossing loops. The line will close in two weeks with full reopening planned for late 2027 🚧⚡

#CrossBorderRail is so much fun, when everyone actually fits onboard and there's even AC! 🤩 If only the illegal border controls would stop so that trains aren't delayed 😌
I know I'm in France but do English-speaking people really think noone understands them in a foreign country? lol (They weren't mean, just talked about me as if I couldn't clearly hear and understand them)
Dense urban development (170 units) right next to frequent S-Bahn and Stadtbahn (12 and 18 tphpd, respectively)? Two underground parking garages 😐 And that's with all reductions for urban area etc. already applied
Karlsruhe trams: we can't offer comfortable transportation because there's either no AC (so ~45°C/113°F onboard) or even if there's one, it's maximum 4° cooler than outside 🔥🥵 Stuttgart Stadtbahn: take a coat if our trains (even the one from the 1980s) are too cold for you ❄️🥶
