📞 Every month, I sit down with the great journalists at @kuow.org to field their questions — and yours! Today, I talked about my proposed budget, my shelter expansion, and more. I hope you’ll give me call next month on November 2nd at noon on KUOW! 📞

Pretty cool that @mayor.seattle.gov takes questions from the public monthly on KUOW. I don't think any mayor or elected official has done this kind of regular direct engagement with people in the time I have lived in Seattle.

If the Democrats win, they have to be ready to bring generational change. Reform the courts, eliminate the filibuster, expand the house, admit DC and Puerto Rico as states, pass a new voting rights act, and prosecute every single corrupt member of the Trump admin.

Cardinal Cupich: “For Chrysostom, the altar inside the church and the ‘altar’ of the marginalized person on the street were two aspects of the exact same reality. To bow before the consecrated Host while being indifferent to the stranger is a fundamental breakdown of eucharistic logic.”

The war on empathy isn’t Christian. Elizabeth Bruenig has a compelling new piece in The Atlantic on the right’s crusade against compassion, which Bishop Robert Barron has now joined. She calls its bestselling manifesto “a guidebook for ignoring human suffering.”

Why Empathy Is Now ‘Toxic,’ ‘Suicidal,’ and a ‘Sin’

According to Gad Saad and his powerful acolytes, compassion is a recipe for “the collective suicide of the West.”

George Saunders on using AI: "Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that?"

Have you spent time trying to write or revise with AI? Is there an experiment that would be interesting enough to try?

I have not. Not for a second. To me, this whole idea of using AI to write is . . . anathema. A thing to be most radically avoided.

Writing is the most precious way one person can communicate their essence to another person. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to get better at making myself present in my writing. Why would I want to sacrifice even one iota of that? Not even in an email and certainly not in a short story or novel.Who are we ceding our authority to, exactly, when we let AI write for us? And why? Why surrender our agency (that amazing ability we have to reach across time and space, with our strange, idiosyncratic phenomenon, and land within the sensibility of another human being) to something that, by its very design, pushes the individual sensibility aside? And in the name of . . . what, exactly? Ease, I guess? Efficiency? The person who chooses to write with AI has also sacrificed, from the start, the opportunity of experiencing difficulty, of struggling to say what he wants to say, of making himself evident in his prose, of trying to find out what he believes. By this, he sacrifices a chance to know himself and his mind better. To me, that’s a shame. And it’s dangerous, because, as we are now finding out, it affects the brain and lessens our capabilities. Thanks, but no thanks, get thee behind me, etc.

I have stared at this photograph more times than I can count. Every time, I look at the man in the white cassock and say, Tu es Petrus. With every passing day, this 71-year-old American, born Robert Francis Prevost, reminds me of Jesus. Then again, I guess that’s the point.

The ICE shadow surge continues. Last week at least 110 Washingtonians were abducted. That’s 15 people per day ripped from their homes and communities. If you see ICE/CBP, please report it to iceout.org. Also on Iceout.org — you can set custom alerts to get notified when ICE is reported nearby.

Leo in Lourdes tonight; “Those who are sick are privileged witnesses to this transfiguration of our lives through faith and love of God…keep these precious words constantly in your hearts: The sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us.”

Google finally updated some of its satellite images of Gaza and my god, it's horrific. The entirety of Rafah has been demolished. The majority of Khan Younis is in ruins. Entire towns completely leveled and erased of the map.

Cardinal McElroy at Mass for World Day of Migrants and Refugees: “Most deeply, we remember the undocumented, whose time on the cross stretches onward. They know the peril, the fear, the overwhelming sadness that dawns upon them because of the policies of our government.”

Incredible: another Ukrainian famine is unfolding, this time in Russian-occupied Oleshky. The remaining inhabitants of what used to be a thriving small city, now down to about 6000 people, are blockaded by Russian forces and cut off from food and water. www.bbc.com/news/article...

Oleshky: Eating garden weeds to survive in Russian-occupied city cut off from food and water

The BBC has spoken to residents in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian town of Oleshky who say they are being "constantly shelled".

Walter Cronkite: After liberating execution camps… Germans (who cried) they didn’t know…were as as guilty as Nazis…because they applauded when Hitler shut down (media) and said, ‘We don’t need to know. We trust our government...’ It’s our duty to know.

The government moving or hiding jailed people to avoid review by courts isn't some loophole in our habeas corpus rights. This government behavior has been considered a violation of the people's habeas corpus rights since at least the Habeas Corpus Act of 1679. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habeas_...

Jailors were forbidden to move prisoners from one prison to another or out of the country to evade the writ. In case of disobedience jailers would be punished with severe fines which had to be paid to the prisoner.[5][6]

This will make it nearly impossible to file habeas petitions, because attorneys won’t even know what federal district their client has been moved to to stage for their removal. Something like a third of all people in ICE custody. apnews.com/article/ice-...

This is Eugenics. Couple amping up the libido of their chosen specimens with their bid to lower the standards on human research subjects’ informed consent and mass deportation, and what other conclusion can be reached?

A thought exercise for transphobic Democrats: replace the "transgender" with "Jewish" in the ads and notice how uncomfortable you suddenly get. There is slightly more trans people in the U.S. (0.95%) than German Jews (0.75%) before the Holocaust. Can't you see how dangerous your slippery slope is?

Marcy Kaptur is the incumbent with a 5 point polling lead so I must assume she put out this ad because this is what she believes.

#OH09: Incumbent Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D) is up on TV with this response spot --

Kaptur to camera:

"We're stuck in another unnecessary war and inflation is making everything worse. But, my opponent won't talk about all that. He'd rather lie about my record"

"Well, here's the truth. I voted with Republicans to keep transgender ideology out of our schools"
