Virginia has a unique law where restoration of voting rights to formerly incarcerated peoples wholly rests on the governor. A federal judge earlier this year said this violates a Reconstruction-era law. An upcoming proposed constitutional amendment in November would make such restoration automatic.

Since taking office in January, Gov. Abigail Spanberger has restored the voting rights of more than 66,000 Virginians who lost them due to felony convictions, her office announced today. “The right to vote is foundational to who we are as Americans,” Spanberger said in a statement.

I am stunned to hear of the passing of the fierce, brilliant and principled scholar activist Johanna Fernandez. Johanna's scholarship will endure. She was a gem and the world is worse for her no longer being here. Rest in power, comrade.
