This is a remarkably extreme statistic. Bordeaux, France has recorded more days >40°C in 2026 than in the entire 105 year period combined dating back to 1920 when records began. This summer has been so far above extreme it’s difficult to put into words. Chart: @WxNB_

The US owes the Pan-American Health Organization $135 million in past dues. Trump's budget proposal cuts funding for PAHO entirely, even though our contribution is 0.001% of federal spending. The result will be even weaker defenses agst measles, dengue & more. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/30/h...

So, @cataranea.bsky.social and I went to Guyana over the past week (ish) to attend #BugShot, in the Rupununi Savannah, at Karanambu Lodge. You wanna see some pictures of what we saw?

A short haired woman with salt and pepper hair and red glasses, knitting, with headphones on, she has a spider-web t-shirt on, and a blue glass pendant. She is lovely.

This is a very real aspect of the (dumb) structure of US health coverage. It creates terrible work environments, stifles creative moves, and "job lock" is a great term, but doesn't really capture the horror.

About 24% of U.S. employees stay in unwanted jobs just for health insurance, a report out Wednesday finds. Up significantly since 2021, the uptick in "job lock" is a concerning sign for the U.S. economy. n.pr/4gQIY5E

"NSF employees are now concerned that the $1 billion of withheld funds will not be released. If they are not, the combination of withheld funds and clawbacks would result in funding cuts of more than 30% for most directorates compared with their planned spending for 2025"

New: The National Science Foundation is preparing to claw back some $500 million in funds from some of its core science programs in physics, math, computer science, and engineering in order to fund a project from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

It has been criminally underreported but Kelsey Pfendler has just rowed solo across the Pacific Ocean from the US coast to Hawaii in record time. A 2,400-mile unsupported journey in 43 days, 17 hours, and 55 minutes. Notably beating the Men’s record by 9 whole days.

Being on the soft money side of academia, when funding is terminated on a whim & the peer review process is undermined, it means we can't predict funding for incoming students
