Learning to tend the earth in SE Chicago.

We received a firsthand report of ICE taking someone from downtown Chicago this morning during a routine immigration check-in at 101 W. Ida B Wells. In addition to street and court arrests, ICE has been taking people from immigration check-in appointments since before Operation Midway Blitz.

It was a frantic day for Chicagoans yesterday as ICE operations in the city escalated. Agents abducted a longtime organizer at an ICE check-in site, and separated families inside immigration court. City council members and activists tried to halt the vans. CPD was there:

Probably more helpful to think of them not so much as “Canadian wildfires” but rather “climate change wildfires currently consuming Canada”

iPhone doesn’t do justice to the rust-coloured haze over Toronto, or the stench. I was fine in an N95. Birds were having a bona fide party in an utterly deserted Home Smith Park. Thinking about my impassioned speech in elementary school arguing for the swift implementation of the Kyoto accords.

N95 wearing genna with yellow haze over the river Dark yellow haze over Humber river Cormorants in the river with sickly yellow tinge reflected Haze over river park

We can see this in the ICE flight data. Domestic “round-up” flights are spiking, and some activist flight watchers report the flights are getting fuller. But deportation and removal flights remain steady. This means the concentration camps are getting packed to the brim. It’s awful to comprehend.

ICE is engaged in a very large escalation nationwide, with the agency claiming to be hitting record arrest numbers amid the return of quotas. This has gotten very little attention from the media because ICE learned lessons from the chaotic disasters of Kristi Noem’s tenure. Keep a watch.

rapid response groups are reporting at least two ice abductions in chicago already this morning: one in avondale at diversey/pulaski (pictured below) and one in humboldt park at kolmar/grand.

two agents in green pants, black t shirts, and green vests that say “police” stand in the street at the driver’s side of a grey suv. two black suvs with flashing lights have boxed in the grey suv.

New: We've been tracking reports of ICE activity across Chicagoland for five weeks. In that time, rapid responders have seen an escalation as feds have abducted dozens, caused at least two car crashes, threatened community members with weapons and flouted state courthouse protections. Read more:

Videos show federal agents pointing weapons at bystanders and trying to access state property as rapid response groups have reported at least 80 detainments across Chicagoland in the last five weeks.

Federal immigration agents are still swamping Chicagoland. Sightings in multiple city neighborhoods and in the suburbs today, with reports of at least three people being taken. "ICE is everywhere," the immigrant advocacy/rapid response group Hijos de Migrantes posted in an alert earlier today.

A list of reported ICE sightings and detainments from across the Chicago area, per Hijos de Migrantes.

seeing reports of rubber bullets and tear gas with an absolute deluge of police forces at Delaney. for tue second night in a row, people are facing cops on charging horses. the governor said sending in state police was “deescalating” the situation.

🚨BREAKING: NJ State police fire flash bang grenades at anti-ICE protesters at POINT BLANK RANGE outside Delaney Hall ICE Prison. "Poison in this f*cking wasteland!" our Jon Farina says. WE'RE LIVE ⬇️

my sincere hope for this moment is that people understand that these reports apply to every detention site, and that detention in of itself is a potential death sentence for anyone in this country no one should experience these horrors regardless of what they’re accused of

“My biggest concern is that somebody else is going to die.” Delaney Hall detainees decry inhumane conditions & no access to medications, @alexmar.bsky.social reports. A Brazilian mother was detained during a routine ICE check-in in Newark, NJ, despite an ongoing visa request & health conditions.

Chicagoland has seen a steady pace of ICE sighting + abduction alerts all week. After one person was taken in Waukegan yesterday, this morning feds are dispersed broadly across the burbs again. Seen in Round Lake Beach and Joliet so far. A worker was snatched at a Bolingbrook Burger King at 5:30am.

if you take one thing away from my reporting pls let it be that *all* surveillance is bad. not just flock. not just briefcam. get rid of one and they’ll get another. companies and police have deliberately built a world where every aspect of our lives is collected and centralized and commodified.

I absolutely do not believe that federal authorities will not have easier access to this info *but even if that were true* we JUST SAW how easy it is to find a friendly fed judge in TX to dislodge records held in one state for medical care deemed unlawful by another

May the 4th be with you as we are living in a crisis where the distance between what it said and what is known to be true has become an abyss Even so, you are not alone, you have friends everywhere

Walgreens is closing another two locations this year in my area (SE Chicago). After they closed THREE last year. When they closed the 3 last year, my Walgreens became UNBEARABLE in terms of waiting. You’d walk in to pick up your “ready” med, & wait 45(!) minutes! Routinely!
