The loss of the United States’ contribution to the Global Ocean Observing System would significantly degrade researchers’ ability to track changes to ocean heat content, a critical variable in weather and climate predictions. eos.org/articles/cha...

Changes in Funding Could Tank Quality of Ocean Heat Content Data - Eos

An uncertain funding landscape threatens the longevity of an ocean observation system critical to projecting tropical storms, sea level rise, and more.

🌊 Every day, ~4,000 Argo floats observe the world’s oceans. They provide essential, open and freely available data that improve weather forecasts, early warnings systems, and climate predictions. Behind this network: more than 30 yrs of scientific effort. Thanks to all those who keep Argo alive!

🎢 Oceanographers have mapped currents with dramatic ups-and-downs like a rollercoaster, in a giant whirlpool spinning off the polar front in the Southern Ocean. These cyclonic eddies are important for the transport of heat, carbon, nutrients and oxygen. 🌊 aappartnership.org.au/rollercoaste...

I am an active learning fangirl and my husband is continually horrified by my creativity used to “torture my students”. Introducing Oceanography Bingo! Also known as how I’m going to get 15 students from 8 different universities to talk to each other for the first time. 🌊

🌊 The ocean absorbs >90% of Earth’s excess heat, and our ability to track it depends on a fragile global network of floats, ships and sensors. New research warns that cuts to the Global Ocean Observing System could make climate signals indistinguishable from noise. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Critical dependence of global ocean heat monitoring on the ocean observing system - Nature Climate Change

International collaboration has facilitated a global ocean observing system, providing data to measure ocean heat content at a resolution that enables the tracking of climate change. This study looks ...

Do other scientists ever get a rush of "I have the coolest job ever" after a fun research meeting or an awesome presentation by a mentee? In this uneasy scientific environment, it's so wonderful to be reminded why we do this work. 🌊 🧪

By the way, if somebody tries to tell you climate change is only a concern of "educated and affluent" liberals, you can show them this map. At least half the people in *every* US state, even the deep red ones, worry about it

Map of the US: Estimated % of adults who are somewhat or very worried about global warming (nat'l avg. 63%), 2025

Every state is at 50% or above. California and bluer states are at higher levels, but zero states are below 50%.

For those who reached out asking how to help: This gofundme is specifically for graduate students who lost personal items, computers, tablets, etc. in the fire. We were told that these items are not retrievable or reimbursable -an added burden for students during a devastating time. Plz share 🌊💙

Lots of people have reached out asking how they can support us after the devastating fire in the MSL building, the heart of @cmarinescience.bsky.social Here’s one way, a GoFundMe organized by our graduate students - gofund.me/4373c6ff3. Please share widely, and thanks for helping our community!

🌊 It’s a sad day for @cmarinescience.bsky.social A lot of world class scientists (and me) have likely lost their life work as our main building surprsingly caught on fire today. We don’t know the scale of the loss, but it’s certainly very very bad. www.fox13news.com/st-petersbur...

Nearing the end of semester two at Georgia Tech, and I am so grateful this team who does awesome science. As our group keeps growing, I will always value the work each of them - one amazing postdoc (@yangx309.bsky.social) and the spectacular GATO “undergrad army” - did to help get us off the ground.
