Heidi’s face shifted from a mild scowl at Robert to a consoling smile at Theo. “The law says you have to Yield, but it doesn’t say you have to be happy about it, and I for one think you are perfectly entitled not to be. For now.”

Theo felt seen by his cousin and he was grateful for the good intentions behind her reassurances, but that only made his dishonesty with her more painful.

“But,” she continued, “you are going to have to find a way to be happy with it by the time that you Yield, or you’ll make a poor decision that you will have to live with for a long time. It’s okay to be scared when you Yield, but don’t be bitter. This world isn’t kind to bitter Yielded men.”

Theo had never been struck by his father, of course, but Eric’s quick and unequivocal answer left him stinging with shame. “Men aren’t better off.”

“Why do you say that?”

“We don’t get to have lives! Moms control everything we do! After we Yield, some other woman just takes the Mom’s place.”

“Nope. Nor for trans. The Turn doesn’t care about your sexual orientation or your gender identity. It only cares if you have sperm or if you have eggs.”

Theo was staggered to think that gay men, trans women, and anybody else with a penis were being forced to Yield to cis women. Just one more reason this whole system was rotten.

“What if I didn’t have any sperm? Could I get out of Yielding if I had my testicles removed?”

“Pretty sure that’s illegal. Lemme check . . . yeah, here it is. ‘Undergoing or performing medical treatment that impairs or is intended to impair a male person’s fertility is considered Abetting Yield Evasion and is punishable by death’.”

“What happens if you don’t Yield by then?” asked Theo.

Miss Karen smiled gently. “The government has a special agency that does nothing but find women for men to Yield to, don’t worry.”

But what if I don’t like her? He wanted to ask. What if she’s mean to me? He didn’t ask though. Not then. There was something in Miss Karen’s voice that cautioned him against pursuing the matter further. By the time they were twelve years old, boys had been well-conditioned to respect women, particularly those who were over eight feet tall.
