The campaign of harassment and intimidation Raise the Colours have undertaken against council staff, contractors, and members of the public as reported by the Clarion today is shocking if not surprising. Excellent reporting. oxfordclarion.uk/the-clarion-...

The Clarion, 4 August 2026

We're doing a rain dance. You? While we wait for some sorely needed water, here is some news, not all of it cheerful. Including less than savoury details about Raise the Colours; celebrating Oxford Ci...

Ex-PM Starmer said, in response to Raise the Colours terrorising people, ‘I am supporter of flags’, ‘I’m very encouraging of flags. I think they’re patriotic and I think they’re a great symbol of our nation’ and his family had ‘got St George’s flag in our flat’ www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...

Raise the Colours Oxfordshire organiser Ben Cullen head-butted a highways worker after police were called to McDonalds in Benson where highways staff were attempting to remove flags from lamp posts;
Highways staff now wear unbranded PPE, work in unbranded vehicles, wear face coverings to hide their identity, and do not travel alone for fear of attacks;
Highways staff working on streetlight maintenance, not flag removal, have been spat on and abused by RTC supporters;
Cullen and his partner Trudy Wells posted the office addresses and phone numbers of highways depots online, leading to comments suggesting “hanging council workers from those same lamp posts”;
RTC Oxfordshire fixed trackers to the vehicles used by highways staff, then used this to find out their home addresses – which have been published online, and repeated to staff with threatening messages;
Highways depots now have to remain locked at all times;
A highways contractor’s sponsorship of a children’s football club is being rethought after concerns that children could be targeted.

Worth repeating, the 'tough new visa rules' were designed specifically for care workers and their family members. If it's not going to work for them, it won't work for anyone else caught by the cruelty of the rules. Bin the whole thing.

Good news. But Rayner's point that it is un-British and unfair, as well as economically and politically counterproductive, to change the rules retrospectively applies to other workers on medium- skilled work visas (technicians/chefs/etc) www.thetimes.com/uk/healthcar...

Andy Burnham hires Political Director : A corporate lobbyist (co.clients inc. Data Centres, outsourcers, British Gas) who was pushing NHS privatisation. Before lobbying he helped run New Zealand Labour when they scrapped a wealth tax, moved right + lost an election. In @privateeyenews.bsky.social

It’s by no means the worst thing going on here, but imagine flying eight thousand miles to live in another country and calling millions of people who are actually from there “traitors”

(1)Mahmood's "reforms" are a bigger attack on workers rights than Cameron excluding workers from Employment Tribunals (2 yr limit)- some Labour people think they are "only" attacks on migrant workers rights- but it doesn't work like that. Remove some 1m migrant workers rights + all workers suffer..

As yet Andy Burnham hasn't appointed anyone to the left of...Andy Burnham. He has appointed big "reassuring" (the markets/media/right) Centrist Ministers. So just by gravity/maths he will drift rightwards from this point, unless he has loads of left Ministerial appointments up his sleeve

Burnham enters No.10 greeted by Steve Rotherham (a good guy) after hugging Josh Simons (a bad guy) - shows the ok influences, and awful influences, on Burnham- lets see which win out

(1)Broadly imo the difference between Starmer and Burnham is Starmer lied, pretended to be left, planned to sharply turn right, attack disabled folk, arrest protesters, grab freebies etc..a fraud. Burnham isn't lying, wants to move away from neoliberalism, but with Starmer's fraudsters on board..

Raise the Colours, an organisation which has had one of its founders charged with murder, has been heavily implicated in a hit and run (currently under investigation), and another "leading light" faces trial for 22 indecent images charges.

This may be a relatively minor thing for people, it may not but the whole phenomenon of 'Raise the Colours' and the shrug with which the government greeted it (IIRC at one point RtC was even tacitly endorsed?) continues to blow my mind.

"... what is expected to be a brief conversation, conducted using words, some of them nouns, though traditionally on such occasions one might expect to hear one or two verbs in there as well from the King..."

"And the prime minister's car just driving up the Mall now, all four wheels on the ground, propelled possibly by an internal combustion engine, Keir Starmer and Lady Victoria no doubt in the back, continuing to respirate and draw oxygen into their lungs, on this unusually sunny..."
