Saturday's Weather Rating: 10/10 🥳🎉THE FIRST PERFECT DAY OF 2026!!! High temperatures reach the upper 70s with comfortable dew points, sunny skies and a southerly breeze. That's the secret formula, man. The vibes are immaculate out there!!

This is an excellent deep dive on a terribly hard and heartbreaking problem. Proud of the brilliant @sonalirajan.bsky.social, whose vital work is featured in this piece. She and others in this field work tirelessly to make a seemingly intractable problem incrementally tractable.

What Will It Take to Prevent School Shootings?

Metal detectors, bulletproof chalkboards, pepper-ball-spraying drones — in our desperation to protect children, we’re turning our schools into fortresses. Columbia researchers are now leading a nation...

Wow @tressiemcphd.bsky.social. It's not just the physical violence, it's also the data surveillance apparatus--data we voluntarily and involuntarily share, weaponized by the state. "It is important enough that a federal cowboy kept one hand on his phone even as his other hand reached for his gun."

“You need only know this: Whatever is happening with your data, it is important enough to the most egregiously lawless administration in American history that it be collected and consolidated.” Always read @tressiemcphd.bsky.social (gift link)

Thanks so much to @danimcclain.bsky.social for this powerful, heartbreaking piece and for highlighting some of the work I have been fortunate to do with my wonderful collaborators at BU on the staggering disparities in exposure to firearm violence that Black children face in this country --

Dani McClain@danimcclain.bsky.social · 7mo ago

Deaths by suicide are increasing at a faster rate for Black children and young adults than for any other racial or ethnic group. I looked at the city where I'm raising a tween to find out why www.thenation.com/article/soci...

This is a genuinely good (shockingly rare!) use of an LLM. A tool that scrapes news articles to build a detailed, live, and human-verified database of gun violence across the US. The resulting database can then can be used to better research and stop our violent epidemic.

I want to talk briefly about the implications of using AI in creative work. First of all, we agree so-called "AI" is ruining our society and planet. BUT (yikes right?), AI is also transforming our cognitive relationship to the things we use it for. 1/12

“What we should be calling for is for our elected officials to use the tools that we know work to render these drills obsolete…. The burdens we are putting on our schools & our kids to prepare for the potential of this kind of violence is, frankly, unacceptable.” — @sonalirajan.bsky.social 🛟

The discourse on active shooter drills, particularly in K-12 schools, is complex. Thank you to Time for this piece, for referencing our recent NASEM consensus study findings, and for including myself and many of my wonderful colleagues in this reporting: time.com/7331491/less...
