I want to stop bitching about AI but I keep seeing the argument made for AI translations that humans had X many years to do it and just to cut through everything else I kind of thought we were all mostly on the same page that LLMs are bad in general and we shouldn't be using them? Whatever!

I've thought for a long time that programmers on game translation projects don't get nearly enough credit and all these Claude translations coming out with untranslated strings and things just not working really show how hard it is to do these things right without the whole game collapsing

I'll let you decide who I'm thinking of, but I think part of being a good translator is being curious about the world, how it works, and how different people relate to it. And if you're only interested in prescribing "reality" instead of probing it, it puts your ability to empathize in stark relief.
