Texans are uniting to tell flock to flock off. These mass surveillance cameras are creating profiles on regular folks for both government and corporations. Surveillance is not safety, and safety is not surveillance.

In case you didn't know, Mike Miles started his charter schools called Third Future in Colorado. He then expanded the charters in Texas, was hired and fired from super of Dallas ISD, then hired by the state as the super of HISD. He is speaking at ed conferences and reformers are lapping it up 😭
I'm glad they kicked Bluebonnet curriculum to the curb (its white Christian nationalist and also trash), but I am appalled that they are utilizing the New Education System Mike Miles "pioneered." It is prescriptive, lockstep, terribly paced, ai written (also), and 100% screen based. Its trash.

To be clear: the Lieutenant Gov is threatening to dock the accountability ratings of districts if they don’t remove The House in Mango Street, The Picture of Dorian Gray, Native Son, and Flannery O’Connor.
Did you know Texas’s TEA accountability ratings are so ripe for manipulation by the state, that the Lieutenant Governor is threatening to pass a law knocking districts down an entire letter grade if they refuse to remove 2000+ library books being targeted by book-banning activists and politicians?
I want to point out, this also has the tremendous knock-on effect of making dual language programs even harder to staff, which is, of course, by design
Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday he plans to call for a ban on school districts employing anyone with an H-1B visa, a move that could cost hundreds of Texas teachers their jobs. bit.ly/4wA1bbC
Make immigrants suffer AND wreck public education. It's the Texas Twofer.

Featured story: “Just the experience of having a gun pointed at you, having agents aggressively approach your car, endangering people on the road, coming into your yard or home, obviously, that is an extremely traumatic event for anyone who has to experience it.”

Target has refused to stand up for Minneapolis and other communities impacted by ICE. As students and educators head back to school, America’s unions stand with @aft.org and urge workers to not shop at Target for school supplies. Shop smart, not Target! https://www.shopsmart.aft.org
I don't want to be a bitch, but it's good to put a brand name or location in a headline if you're reporting on a recall. This affects GreenWise blueberries and mixed berries sold at Publix stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

if i were in a tight re-election campaign, i don’t think i would start making existential threats toward public education

I can't help but giggle a little when some middle‐aged white businessman is twitching and flinching at getting blood drawn and I sit like a rock
Waiting for fasting bloodwork and all I can think about is how desperately I want some coffee
I dont really understand why these books are particularly difficult for him. He understands the difference between fiction and fact, he understands that metaphor and imagery are comparisons/descriptions and not reality, but with these books--maybe because of the diary format?--it all breaks down
I think they would likely effect my youngest to a much lesser degree (shes less of a chameleon), but older is a mimic and, frankly, has a ton of trouble separating himself from the text, and understanding that the text is not an accurate representation of a modern middle school experience.
Ive said it before but ill say it again. I fucking hate the "Diary of a Whimpy Kid" books. Greg is unrepentant asshole, who doesnt like this family and whose family doesnt really like him, and frankly the entire world seems fucking misanthropic. At least for my sensitive kid, they are toxic
I wrote about the parallels between the anti-trans/LGBT movement in Texas and the surge in Islamaphobia in Texas politics, as exemplified by the freakout over Muslim ammenities in Texas airports. Something I've been mulling for a long time: www.chron.com/culture/reli...
What a war over foot washing stations at Texas airports says about Greg Abbott
What do foot washing stations and rainbow crosswalks have in common? Greg Abbott doesn't like them.

Texans are rallying to halt destructive border construction in Big Bend National Park. Even if you're not in Texas, call your representatives and urge them to call for the halt of the destruction.
Not to be some wild-eyed innocent, but I think it should be slightly bigger news that The Lancet have crunched the numbers and found that Musk's USAID cuts will kill 14 million people. And that's just by 2030. That's 9,600 people a day, every day, until the next world cup rolls around.
New estimate of Elon Musk’s death toll just dropped www.thelancet.com/journals/lan...
100% I have seen it happen to my husband more than once. Its always an exercise in bullshit patriarchical dominance posturing and its always for such tenous reasons as "existing while large"
one of the funniest things about Reacher discourse is everyone going “okay it is completely ridiculous that so many random assholes keep taking a run at this human kaiju” and then actual real life big guys going “no that’s accurate people just try to fight us for being big all the time”
Texas comptroller just (after delay) released the numbers. 70% of voucher users this year were never in public schools. Almost precisely what I predicted to the Texas legislature when I testified 18 months ago.
Absolutely. Starving public schools of funding and undermining local control of districts is the 1-2 punch of systematically dismantling them, all while preaching "school choice" in bad faith
Like, education reform conferences fucking love him. He gets speaking gigs all over. The NYT slobbered all over him in their one article about the takeover. It matters that he is a liar, cheater, and truly believes kids should be stuck in bookless lock-step slides and worksheets classrooms.
