Working my way through the Rathbone-Bruce Sherlock Holmes movies & so far my favorites are the Universal WW2 ones—Holmes & Watson defeat Nazis, Holmes gives a few stirring words about “this sceptered isle” or defending democracy at the end, roll credits, this theater sells war bonds.

i believe in the criminal justice system but i also believe that woman beaters get away with everything so sometimes you need a friend from high school that is insane to help you trick a guy out for beers and put him down is the premise of my fictional story i am writing

After hearing the French language version (same untranslated title) supposedly restored many passages cut by her US publisher I went out of my way to track it down, but it's mostly the exact same dialogue as the English language version with a few "& that's why AMERICA IS A LIVING HELL!" tossed in.

Chocolates for Breakfast by Pamela Moore. Before Lena Dunham, a precocious 18 year-old wrote about another girl who grew up too fast. Glamorous in the way of trying on mother's high heels, and poignant.

Back in 1979 or so (fourth grade) I remember our teacher Mrs. Wentz read all of _The Martian Chronicles_ to us over the course of some weeks. (This was before the Rock Hudson miniseries I'll add.) Heady stuff, but I'm glad of it. Of course, this story always sits with me. Today is August 4, 2026.

The Sandbaggers is really good anyway but I also appreciate a lot how every episode is "we're dropping you straight in & assuming you remember those plot points from last time or the time before, if you didn't pay attention too bad, yes the protagonist is intensely 'unlikeable' we DGAF goodbye."

Spent all of yesterday rewatching the director's cut of Until the End of the World & I'm sorry but I still love that movie despite any & all imperfections, & find it fascinating as a cultural artifact that could only have appeared in that very brief immediate post-Cold War moment & then never again.

Hey Netflix, the only media footage I've ever seen related to the Pan Am 103 bombing is one of the victims' mothers prostrate on an airport floor howling in sounds of grief I hope never to hear again as long as I live so no, that miniseries is not "for me" whatever your algorithm thinks about it.

It is possible that in the next few years television will wreck movies, not, as was thought possible earlier, by taking the audience away, but by its simplified methods and by killing B movies, which were the training ground for directors. (1966)

I've seen a lot of fellow writers post stories about getting shafted. Most don't name the outlet, and I don't blame them one bit. Times are terrible. You could still wind up needing a gig from the place. So I deeply admire Jason for having the guts to name Vulture and give the details.

Well, it’s invoicing day, and since they’re really apparently not going to pay me for something I wrote for them two months ago, I guess today is the day to post about how @vulture.com fucks over its film freelancers. Long (sorry) thread, with receipts:

your apartment, the sport of basketball, and the Republic of Korea are all social constructs. mere recognition of this fact does not actually make the question of whether you are standing in your own apartment, playing basketball, or a Korean national up in the air until settled by op ed editors

We Appreciate Your Enthusiasm: The Oral History of Q101 (onetime Chicago “alternative” powerhouse) was unexpectedly interesting in this department—you can track almost moment by moment as the ‘90s went on how station consultants & management took a deep breath & said, “we gotta get more rapist.”

This is the British (read: more polite) version of the American alt-right’s love for corporate grunge (Creed, Limp Bizkit) There was a systemic and industry wide selling of 90s alternative to men and thus butching it up as much as possible by leaning into misogyny, anti-PC backlash etc etc
