I got as far as the remains of Building 7 on October 13; I’ve never smelled anything like that. I was there for an hour? Less? The smell was unspeakable, a mixture of things that had never been mixed, it got in my throat, hair, pores, brain. I felt off for days. I didn’t go back for ten years.

Aside from her many other accomplishments, Dolly Parton did more for the cause of literacy than anyone who ever lived, probably. That work will continue.

I know, or used to know, an attorney who worked on a land deal regarding Dollywood, and she breezed into a meeting with donuts, gave everyone a hug, and said something like, “Let’s get this done, guys!” and breezed out. His precise reaction was the CEO quote. He also said she smelled great.

I forget which CEO left a business meeting with Dolly Parton shaken. “How does anyone say no to her?”
