New paper out in #PRX-Life! We take a step back from molecular detail and ask: how do you quantify cell #polarization at the #mesoscale? Using live-cell imaging + analysis, we define phases of cell polarization and a framework to compare wildtype + perturbed cells. journals.aps.org/prxlife/abst...
Quantitative Characterization of Budding Yeast Polarization at the Mesoscale
A quantitative description of budding yeast polarization derived from live cell imaging enables systematic comparison of polarization phenotypes, revealing varying degrees of variation in physical cha...

📢 Excited to share that I’ve received the NSF CAREER Award! The $1.26M award will support our ambitious research and education program on actin dynamics! Recruiting project assistants, postdocs and PhD students. More info on our website : www.shekharlab.org @emorycollege.bsky.social
My Dispatch published today in @currentbiology.bsky.social! doi.org/10.1016/j.cu... In 1950, Bruno Straub described depolymerization as the great unsolved problems of actin biology. A new cryo-EM study from Dominguez lab at @pennmuscle.bsky.social now reveals it all! @emoryuniversity.bsky.social
Exciting news from the lab! 🎉 Ekram's presentation at the #APSMarchMeeting was selected for the DBIO Best Talk Award. A well-deserved recognition - and it comes with a stipend & lifetime bragging rights😉. Congratulations, Ekram! 👏 @emorycollege.bsky.social @apsphysics.bsky.social
Thanks to all the students, postdocs, and collaborators over the past 15 years that really did the work that this AAAS Fellowship celebrates. Happy to share it with all of you! news.syr.edu/2026/03/26/3...

Senior professors - if you want to help your junior colleagues in these times, I am begging you, review our papers. I have done 25 manuscript reviews in the last 6 years. But my own manuscript is stalled out waiting for reviewers. Relatedly, I won't be doing any more reviews until tenure. 🧪
Cancer Research UK is fed up of paying too much for open access publishing so they are completely stopping funding this activity: news.cancerresearchuk.org/2026/04/01/w...
Why we won’t be funding open access publishing any more - Cancer Research UK - Cancer News
The open access movement was bold and promising, but ultimately disappointing. Now is the time to stop and call for a new way to make publishing work…

70 yo insomniac here, this is a great start but we must also drop the glam pub reward effects during critical evaluation of researchers for promotion and research support. It's easier to get off the glam train once you've arrived. Alternative transportation is necessary.

Stentor is a unicellular species, but it has been known to aggregate into short-lived groups to feed more efficiently. www.newscientist.com/article/2356...
Multicellular life may have begun with brief alliances between cells
Single-celled organisms called Stentor can feed more efficiently by pairing up, illustrating a possible stage in the evolution of complex life forms

This is an awesome discovery: A single-celled organism with no brain called Stentor seems capable of Pavlovian learning. Yes, it can actually learn to associate two things despite having no neurons. My latest for @newscientist.com. 🧪 #science #memory #learning www.newscientist.com/article/2519...
Single-celled organism with no brain is capable of Pavlovian learning
A trumpet-shaped, single-celled organism seems able to predict one thing will follow another, hinting that such associative learning emerged long before multicellular nervous systems

Single-celled organisms can learn! Happy to share some my insights with @chrisnsimms.bsky.social Check out this piece by Chris for @newscientist.com
