"RNA is the love language of the genome." Science person, RNA fan, lab account over at areslab.bsky.social Interested in RNAs that must adopt two or more distinct structures to function. Also interested in mechanisms of intron gain during genome evolution.

I think it also revealed just how quickly a bunch of otherwise very hard problems can be to solve with global collective action. The fuckin Ganga was running clear water for the only time in my lifetime because for 2 weeks nobody threw garbage in it. The canals in Venice had fish.

Covid lockdowns demonstrated, in a deeply imperfect way, the possibility of large-scale social solidarity for a higher cause. That is a prime reason why so many powerful people want us to run screaming away from them into the comforting arms of selfish individualist competition.

Trump 2 has shown that the bulk of federal, state, and local "law enforcement" don't perform any useful functions at all. If they did, it would not be so easy to re-task them to brainless gestapo work like rounding up whole neighborhoods and waiting outside public buildings.

I wrote about how immigration arrests are at all-time highs, even as ICE is trying to assume a lower public profile. How are they doing this? Look to your local police.

The graphic reads: "Science and health policy in America is under threat from:" The graphic contains six people who are forwarding the Trump admin's war on science. Their photos have their description next to them. Trump: "A fossil fuel pocket-padder". RFK Jr.: "An anti-vax conspiracy theorist". Mehmet Oz: "An ableist cheapskate". Lee Zeldin: "A climate-denying saboteur". Russell Vought: "An authoritarian policy writer". Jay Bhattacharya: "A grifting liar".

looking at the headlines and reflecting once again on how all the smart, hard-working, honest people I know feel like they’re going at least a little insane in our era of total Stupid Immoral Asshole ascendancy

One of the worst things about the Senate’s attempted Fauci show trial is how the supposed evidence against him is early in COVID he considered multiple hypotheses, then increasingly ruled some unlikely as evidence came in. The objection is he did science. Fundamentally that is what’s under attack.

This is a generalization of course, but I suspect the high # of violent incidents with right-wingers is due to frustration with not having the tools to deal with life on an intellectual level.

The doctor who originally said we should wash our hands before performing medical procedures was thrown in an insane asylum after being stripped of his credentials. After his death, he was proven correct and vindicated. *looks at the news* Shame shit, different century.

Billionaire logic is that it makes more sense to terraform Mars rather than to stop venusifying Earth, and that it is a better strategy to build underground bunkers than to make the whole planet a better place to live for everyone.

Benasque RNA 2026 was easily the best meeting I’ve ever been to. Grateful for the connections I made & the collaborations that were started. Going home was bittersweet. 🧬⛰️

With 57% of its electricity now coming from renewables, including 22% from solar & 21% from wind, Spain built one of Europe's most impressive electricity systems. Solar is now the country's fastest-growing source of power & has helped drive some of the lowest wholesale electricity prices in Europe.
