It's incredible that I can buy Microsoft Office in 2019 and then on July 13th of 2026 they can decide actually you're just no longer allowed to use it. Now you need to pay $100 per year. This should be illegal. The product works just fine, even if they no longer support it with updates.

This is 100% correct, and you can’t fake it. As a medieval historian, I see so many people try to outsmart this trap by talking about “trade” or “taxes,” but because they didn’t really learn it they modernize things far too much and in ways that flatten the world and make it less interesting!

To write in the classic high fantasy mould, you need not be hung up on food specifically, but there must be SOME very mundane thing you're sincerely interested in and prepared to describe in excruciating detail every time it comes up. Clothing. Furniture. Architecture. It doesn't work without it.

As someone who coaches youth girls sports for a living, amateur and especially youth sports is one of the most important and sacred things in this world, but no individual sport or performance matters AT ALL. It only matters because of who you become while playing, and who you let play with you.

the obsession with trans women in sports is, apart from the abject bigotry, a symptom of how we take amateur sports participation way too seriously in this country.

Cheryl Reeve, winningest coach in WNBA history, defends transgender athletes against sports bans. “Exclusion is never the answer. Separate isn’t equal. Trans lives matter.” 💗🏳️‍⚧️💗🏀💗

Scapegoats are emotionally cheaper than systems. Blaming the left asks nothing of you. It feels good and righteous and right. Asking whether your institutions and your party failed you requires dismantling beliefs you have spent your lifetime building. That is emotionally expensive.

As long as you identify yourself directly and personally with the cultural objects you like you will find critique intolerable, regardless of the quality of the critique or the object

I think the thing that non-Americans don’t really get about our health insurance is that even if you LIKE your coverage, your company can just go with a new plan that is both worse and more expensive. Our insurance bill is going up by 400/mo with worse terms and there is nothing we can do about it

Wile E. Coyote, despaired, takes a bucket of paint and a brush and paints a beautiful two-bedroom house on a mountainside. He paints a beautiful coyote wife in the window, and two adorable coyote kids running around in the yard. He tries to enter this new coyote life, but it is inaccessible to him

I love that my wife’s company is changing insurance providers for the 3rd year in a row, and now we’ll lose the PCP we’ve had for a decade, as well as our new baby’s pediatrician, and our dentist. But at least it costs more!

WOW. New announcement from Seattle CMs Strauss, Hollingsworth, and Foster saying they will fund universal school meals starting in the fall after all by using the general fund. Hard to see this as anything but a realization of the high political price they paid for their votes yesterday.

A lot of people don’t realize the dust bowl wasn’t a natural phenomenon. It happened when agrobusiness interests dramatically transformed the plains without regard for drought, and created vicious dust storms that choked whole families to death. That’s what I think of when I read about data centers.

Rax is right and also: these are the same projects. these people are so interested in reinforcing gender expectations to the point where they're medicating people in support of that. if one's experience of gender diverges from expected masculine norms, there are forcing functions. this is one.

it's not an own to point out that all these fucking guys trying to deny trans people their hormones are so into HGH and whatnot. they don't care either way about 'gender affirming care.' they want to be he-men and they want trans people to die. to them the two projects are perfectly coherent

Mainstream Respectable opinion is that people joking about a bad person's death represents a culture of cruelty, but really it represents a culture of impunity. It's a coping mechanism for watching someone do evil their whole life and never seeing consequences
