Stargazing vet from the Dark Satanic North. Once hit the stumps from the boundary aged 11, all down hill since then. Was in practice, now harping on about #OneHealth, transboundary infectious disease and whatnot 🇬🇧🇦🇺🇪🇺

Lots of interesting points in this thread and the replies. It's a genuinely remarkable change that you can have a Catholic prime minister, a Jewish foreign secretary, a gay defence secretary & a British-Asian home secretary, and those are among the least controversial facts about those appointments

Wes Streeting is the first UK Secretary of State for Defence who is openly gay. Gay people have been able to serve openly in the UK Armed Forces since 2000. Like PM Andy Burnham's Catholicism, something that would have been controversial is largely now a matter of biographical colour.

I think the tech bros are only too happy to see the pushback against SM being funnelled into this wholly ineffective intervention. Instead of tackling the root cause of the problem - attention stealing, algo driven polarisation and uncontrolled misinformation/anti rationalism

To pick out just one of the fundamental misunderstandings there, fossil fuels are incredibly inefficient. We throw away 2/3rds, almost 400 exajoules, of our energy budget, mostly just extracting, moving & using fossil fuel, >$4.5 trillion, almost 5% of global GDP. Before anything productive is done!

The Incredible Inefficiency of the Fossil Energy System - RMI

Over $4.6 trillion per year, almost 5% of global GDP and 40% of what we spend on energy, is wasted due to fossil inefficiency.

Interesting that the idea of another EU referendum is regularly discussed on broascast media as something that would cause division and thus a bad idea. But plans to deport literally millions of people are discussed as administrative questions.

It turns out that the tactic of "dithering for as long as you possibly can and finally being forced taking a decision that makes you look weak, pisses off one side immensely and buys you no credit with the other" is not in fact the secret code to being a successful Prime Minister

The dawning of a beautiful day here in Avalon. Photo taken today on Glastonbury Tor. The sun is rising almost centrally now through the archway of St Michael's tower. I was lucky enough to have the place to myself this morning too.

Our breakdown of Wes Streeting’s donors has been doing the rounds online for the last year. Now we’ve updated it – with another £55,000 from OPD Group.

A century before the Wright bros, Sir George Cayley described the relationship between thrust, weight, lift & drag, invented a cambered wing with control surfaces, the tail fin, wired wheels. He built & flew a glider decades before engineering capability caught up with his vision for powered flight.

When Einstein developed general relativity the closest thing to a practical application that could even be imagined at the time was a slightly more precise description of where to look for the planet Mercury in the sky, and yet now we’d all be literally lost without it. Anyway: fund basic research.
