GAMER YANG WEN-LI: So when you level up, you get +1 ATK, and you feel like you could win any battle. But you also start encountering enemies who have +1 DEF, so everything is the same. And it's been that way for the whole long history of gaming. Gamers have yet to try another way, for all our talk.

This was a fascinating exercise: find out what went wrong with creativity in the games industry. The conclusion: there are too many cowards controlling too many critical levers, and until we figure out how to put people -taste, creativity, and craft- back at the top, we're going to be stuck.

The games industry is stifled by a culture of fear, concludes a workgroup hosted by Rami Ismail. https://bit.ly/4vPbIzv

deeply annoying that creative breakthroughs don’t come on schedule from direct work but from things like “open-ended conversations with interesting people” and “doing nothing”

ppl on my street are watching the game with different amounts of delay so i hear one group cheering and then, two seconds later, another group complaining

nothing could ever ruin the immense thrill and wonder of seeing tolkien's lord of the rings trilogy brought to life on the big screen by peter jackson like seeing tolkien's the hobbit brought to life on the big screen by peter jackson

Increasingly frustrated by the movement of game design towards satisfying tags and tag expectations.. It feels that more and more you need to decide on the tag you want to appeal to and fulfil, before you even begin to design a game..

given that there's a contact sensor in the ball, i think the world cup broadcasts are missing an opportunity to implement screen shake

just to add to this - i do think indies who make significant money should be reinvesting more back into the gamedev scene. there are some notable examples of this, and i hope we see more of them. but it's not an overall solution to the problems these digital platform ecosystems have created

i would like Toby Fox or the Balatro guy or any other lottery winning success to be investing back into the gamedev scene more. but i'm sure they're still doing way more for games world collectively than Valve, who literally owns a huge chunk of the entire ecosystem.
