Observing and hopefully learning

“Racism is good and policy should be designed to reflect that principle,” couched in euphemism, is an acceptable opinion in the anglosphere leadership class but “racism is bad and policy should be designed to reflect that principle” is wokeness gone amok and unacceptable bsky.app/profile/okwo...

The editor in chief of The Economist referring here to the AfD’s leader as a “perfectly thoughtful person“ instead of what she truly is - a driver and enabler of German fascism - is a huge part of the problem.

The closest I've ever come to a genuine "WTF?! Since when did YOU like this?? You MADE FUN OF ME for liking this in college!!" moment was watching anime take off in the US. I've told this story before, but when I was at Spelman, I had to go to a Princess Mononoke screening totally alone. (cont)

Genuinely impossible to make people understand how much most the United States in the 90s hated and looked down on anime if they didn't live through it.

Trump doesn’t force people to do bad things. All he did was show people they could get away with being horrible if they really wanted to, and a lot of powerful people decided they didn’t need to pretend anymore. Especially those in influential positions who could push back but did not.

The son of the man shot and killed by ICE: I am Ronaldo Salgado, the oldest son of Lorenzo Salgado Araujo. He should've been picking up the last of his guys before heading to finish up construction. Unbeknownst to all of us, my dad had been shot inside his van by ICE agents in unmarked cars.

I think this presidency has been very clarifying to me personally in what I exactly I believe and who the threats to that are and which of my fellow travelers or elites don't actually give a shit (distressingly many)

People are always telling me the tech guys need to take humanities classes like Peter Thiel didn’t study philosophy. Perrhaps the folks advocating this line of bullshit are maybe just sort of doing the same “the solution to the problem is that I should be paid” as everybody else. The issue is power!

Oh and it’s precisely because this is their definition that no amount of flag waving will convince them that dems or the left are patriotic; the definition of patriotism is “holding right wing beliefs”

here is what i think: we're not consumers or spectators, we are participants with agency. you should not hope that democrats will do anything. you must work to force them to do the right thing. the odds are long, but we are far from the first americans to face long odds. we will win.

you know, when someone says something like "these are the things that need to be done to avert disaster" and your response is "you think democrats will do that?!?" all you're telling me is that you think politics is a spectator sport

you see the difference between Iran and America is that in one country ultimate power lies with a cabal of robed theocrats that pays only lip service to democracy, whereas the other is in the Middle East.
