Transparency post: I have cobbled together an excel sheet and the number of sales of The Planter's Daughter since it came out is c. 171. That might seem a low number but given I'm a one-woman operation, I don't think it's too bad. I will keep going!

Climate denial is getting louder. Reality is getting harder to ignore. When parks are brown, rivers are shrinking and firefighters are battling blazes across the globe, governments must accelerate climate action, not slow it down.
This burning summer is the proof: the voices of climate denial aren’t just delusional, they’re deadly | Sadiq Khan
Look at our blazing forests and parched cities. Green policies aren’t a ‘luxury’, and we can’t burn more oil and gas. People need the truth, says London mayor Sadiq Khan

These businesses have known for years that a ban on single use plastic was inevitable. Instead of adapting, they lobby. (No surprise to see two fossil fuel companies lobbying to keep plastic lined cups 😏)
A coalition of service stations, fast food restaurants, café chains and shops is lobbying hard against the latest government plans for a tax on disposable cups. Applegreen, Bewley's, Butlers Chocolates, McDonald's, Insomnia and Maxol are among firms pushing against a 'latte levy'. jrnl.ie/7121909
Wildfire was still smoking in Glencullen area in the Dublin mountains yesterday. Fair play to all the firefighters up and down the country fighting fires like this. Leave no trace!
Crowdsourcing appeal: anyone got any suggestions for a name for a horrible young white female in the arts/media/hack world? Must be Anglo sounding.
Another thought from holidays: Disneyland is structural violence.
Feel like I have buckets of mental and creative energy, stimulated and excited - this happens every time I take a week off 😂
For comparison, the car park at Mayfield library was recently resurfaced, something that has to be done periodically — at a cost of approximately €3,500 per space.
Bike parking enabling 60 hospital staff to cycle to work is a win for the taxpayer Comment & Analysis: A cost of €85,000, or €1,416 per space, for a secure bicycle shed for the National Maternity Hospital is cheap compared to building car parking, which is estimated to cost €5,000 to €85,000 per…

As a driver I say hurrah! Any excuse not to have to deal with the ring road or Cork city.
Great news! Irish Rail have lodged planning for a P&R at Dunkettle — 300 standard parking spaces and 166 cycle parking, including 42 secure bike lockers. This is the first P&R on the northside and will serve motorists from East Cork/Waterford and the motorway, as well a commuters in Glanmire.
Now this is the kind of trash talk we can get behind. We’re containerizing neighborhoods by taking trash off our sidewalks and allowing mid-size buildings to trade in their wheelie bins for a bigger, better, cleaner alternative: Empire Bins. It’s time to put a lid on it, New York.
This comes up in The Planter's Daughter - the murder victim being a geography teacher and riling up the local pillars of the community when she tells her pupils their prosperous dairy farmer parents are responsible for climate breakdown. The school board then gets her dismissed.

A very distant, much zoomed-in-upon, grainy and bashful kingfisher from this morning's dog walk. But a briefly paused dot of electric blue is still a dot of electric blue injected into a morning. And its flight to get to its perch was all the startled joy you could wish for.
I'll be running a 6-week course at the @irishwriterscentre.bsky.social in Dublin in September on writing science fiction and fantasy. Check out the details on their website if you'd like to join me in my discussions about making stuff up. irishwriterscentre.ie/courses/writ...
That’s mad, Ted. I was on the team who developed that system, tho I was responsible for internal eSubmissions rather than ePQs. That was my team mate, a gentleman from Portugal.
A couple of months on, an update: the current system allows TDs to lodge PQs simply by sending the text to an designated email address. After the recess they’ll have to use a gated online system to supply questions instead, making it more cumbersome to lodge multiple interrelated questions at once.
This is short-sighted. There are many bright people in Gaza who have a lot to offer this country. This “not enough documentation” bullshit is pure gradgrind meanness.

Cork-based Jean Grainger writes Irish historical fiction books, popular in the US among the diaspora

What's going is that Grainger is exactly the kind of author the Irish times would have turned up their nose at a year or two ago
Can anyone explain what this means? I got an order today but it seems to have gone back to zero.
