The problem with John Self’s post is that he reviews fiction for the Irish Times and that can have a real effect on an author’s career. So when he equates the Garvaghy Road protestors against unionist supremacy with anti-immigrant fash, that’s a real problem for authors writing about these topics.

I was researching the tactics used by the Nazis who weaponised the Sudeten separatist movement with similar rhetoric, for the piece that would eventually become my novella, Unfortunate Stars. Identical to this propaganda, let’s hope the outcome is different.

The depiction of transitioning in middle age felt uncannily accurate — the confusion, the fear, the quiet moments of self-recognition. So much of it resonated with my own experience. It’s rare to feel so seen in a novel.

When I emailed my TDs about the immigration changes they all responded within minutes to hours. Obviously they were rote responses but I get the feeling that if enough people get in touch it might cause them to wobble. It seems to be happening somewhat in some of the statements coming out lately.
Dark money in the heart of the literary movement too. Poor Joanne Harris had to deal with an attempted heave in the Society of Authors from a certain transphobe and her allies - and she does have allies.

But here we see dark money in the heart of the Labour movement, quietly funding transphobia and exclusion.

Duncan Hothersall@dhothersall.bsky.social · 3d agoThe promised crowdfunding effort never materialised, and the fundraising company turned out to be unnecessary, because this case, like several other similar ones including Sandie Peggie's case against the Royal College of Nursing, has been fully funded by a single anonymous donor.
Each and every one of us should feel deep shame and make sure that FFFG representatives feel that shame when they come begging for your vote next time around.
