This is how we know the Proto-Indo-Europeans didn't have cordless telephones
simu - "telephone" in Swahili, from Persian sīm ("wire, cord") sími - "telephone" in Icelandic, from Old Norse síma ("string, cord")
The frustrating thing is that the counter argument is right there: concretely frame it in terms of tradeoffs. How many deaths is your pastoralist fantasy worth, exactly? Please be specific. But you need someone to actually make that argument.
Increasingly think we need a ‘modernity is actually good’ political tendency. the right is putatively pro-industry and economic growth but thinks science is gay and wants to throw out vaccines for essential oils, the left putatively believes science but also embraces crank degrowth NIMBYism
calvinist who believes in building a big bouncy castle for everyone who isnt Elect because they need their non-hell time to be as pleasant as possible
this is really interesting. i guess the efficiency gains for specializing/modularizing parts of a system are such that there's always going to be an incentive to do that as long as you're operating under any kind of constraint (calories, time, computing power).
The human brain is strikingly modular: distinct networks for language, formal reasoning, social reasoning, physical reasoning. Is this fundamental to intelligent systems, or an accident of evolution? In our new preprint, we find the same modular organization emerges in LLMs.
As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic hater.
apparently the only way to prevent periodic heat domes over western europe would be to irrigate the whole iberian peninsula. and im just saying i think it’s worth a shot at this point.

The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting.

In general the phrase "death tax" makes no sense as an attack. Of course we'd want to put a tax on death, death is bad, so should be disincentivize
people will talk about how much they hate capital W Worldbuilding and then go rave about Dungeon Meshi curious!
every time people start talking about worldbuilding on the Internet
the good news is, people are alike all over. this is also the bad news.
i guess if i was british i would be "Eco-Socialist." but are there really people who want to introduce american-style primaries to UK politics?? this seems like a terrible idea!
Right - you all thought that quiz was too US-centric. So I've vibe-coded something far more British. Specifically British, because I am *not* making a Northern Irish Political Compass. From taxes to the monarchy, answer the questions and see where you sit. quiz.jmoxley.co.uk
and i shall not be dark, but beautiful and terrible as the morning and the night! fair as the sea and the sun and the snow upon the mountain! dreadful as the storm and the lightning! stronger than the foundations of the earth. all shall love me and despair!
