I’ve seen in two culture /higher ed magazines recently the claim that the printing press engendered a crisis of authority at universities bc anyone could publish what they wanted and people could learn things without universities. This is not true.

As someone who was born in 1980s and worked @ Condé Nast, I am required by elder millennial law to watch DEVIL WEARS PRADA 2. I found it very pleasurable (also ironic) to see Anne Hathaway’s character wearing a shirt with the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU) logo. I want one!
“The Birth of a Nation” was a Klan recruitment tool! That museum film departments, film historians, film critics etc valorized the movie until fairly recently is both disgusting/depressing and itself worthy of study. (Back in the day, one of my NYU profs insisted that Griffith wasn’t racist.)

The NAACP had all sorts of other issues to focus on, ones where they could make stronger cases, but they saw BoaN as an immediate threat that needed to be responded to.
