Just a reminder: "racial realist" is what David Duke called himself when he went from being the Imperial Wizard of the Klan to a prominent candidate in the Louisiana governor race.

Today, we remember an important turning point in history: the abolition of the transatlantic slave trade.
yep, i will note that the fugitive slave act was used to try to kidnap free blacks and sell them into slavery
Breaking my heart this morning: “Fitting ankle monitors on noncitizens without a criminal history who remain in compliance with their immigration cases has little precedent.” True in the narrowest sense. False given how the history of slavery and peonage roars through each part of this story.
A few that no one has gotten to: Who Killed Piet Bardol?, The Old Drift, The Tusk that Did the Damage (tho Loot might be the obvious Tania James), Dead Astronauts, Ngugi's Devil on the Cross, A Small Place, Poetry: What Work Is, Solie's Wellwater. @taoleighgoffe.bsky.social's Dark Laboratory.
Today, for the first time in New York City history, 2,000 two year-olds received offers for FREE 2-K. A big step for those who take baby steps. A big step towards a City every New Yorker can afford.
What books are on our editors’ nightstands this month? For @taoleighgoffe.bsky.social, co-editor of our Global Black History section, it’s Marie Mitchell’s “Kin: Caribbean Recipes for the Modern Kitchen,” out now from @wwnorton.com.

#Sugarwork. Sugar flow. What’s missing from this chart? So many sugar thoughts after co-presenting at a brilliant Tate, International Slavery Museum event at the Liverpool World Museum with the amazing Imani Jacqueline Brown on legacies of the plantation. #BlackEcologies
I write each new sentence, each essay, to get closer to something I couldnt know before. Not a given for every author or scholar.

I finished writing a chapter and an essay today after many months of trying. 5,000 words total. As a work from home + work in-person mother of a toddler with zero childcare, please clap 🫠👶🏽🫶🏽🧒🏽 or cry with me
Triumphant. New York, New York. Say it twice. 🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀🏀
this is what happens when you have a government composed of people with no vision, no beliefs and no animating principle beyond the ironclad certainty that they deserve to be in charge, and the people they don't like are illegitimate scum
Phone ban, social media ban & curfew, trans bathroom ban, trans youth healthcare ban, repeated protest ban, arrests of peaceful protestors for Palestine. All this government seems able to do is ban, ban, ban. No positive vision of the future, just kneejerk authoritarian crackdowns.
Cathartic!! Tbh the unthinkable moments that show us there's a political future. 🏀🏀🫠
