Alisaie of Light and Venat 1/2

Alisaie brings tidings of the end of the star and Venat grins at her with a cheeky, infantilizing amusement. Alisaie puts her hands on her hips and juts her chin up at the woman who will one day become her god but Venat simply laughs and says,
"You really are her, aren't you?" or "I can hardly believe it. All of her light and half of her size."
Alisaie gives up her posturing. There is no reason to act defensive. Venat is on the verge of losing her home, here, in this time, too. Venat is kind. There is something about her that is more honest than the snide mouth of Emet-Selch and the offputting smile of Hythlodaeus. Venat will be the one who will anchor Alisaie to the light that shall protect and guide her. Venat will show her the way. Venat will take her body and splinter it into as many shards as necessary and send her off to battle in them all.
"You really are her," Venat says, sweetly. Her voice sounds as if she is a split second from reaching out and tugging at Alisaie's cheek.
Alisaie wishes she could say she is sick of hearing of this past self, this Azem, but she is curious by nature and all too familiar with the misery of being the lesser side of a mirror. She and Venat stand on a towering bridge and look out over a sunset of a realm long dead. Somewhere out there, she is looking at that same sun. She is bright-faced and bold-footed and truly, seemingly, from everything Alisaie has heard, beloved by all.

Alisaie's fingers curl around the banister of the bridge. She leans her weight on her palms. She asks, "Is she good at her job?"
"Hm?"
"Your former seat on the Convocation. Is she a good successor?"
Venat's head tilts. "What an odd question to ask."
Alisaie flushes. "I know you chose her, so you must have seen something in her, just—it seems important. Not to mention difficult."
Venat says, "She is excellent in her work and a sunbeam upon this star. Did you think that you might be anything less?"
Alisaie admits, "I've never led anything larger than a nameday luncheon."
Venat questions,
"'Nameday'?"
There is no time to explain nameday celebrations to a race that lives so long they can lose decades to meager distractions.
Alsai sighs. Can l ask a more embarrassing
"Surely!"
"Emet-Selch..." Alisaie starts. She cringes. "Was she, ah, being courted by him?"

$"Oh, absolutely not," Venat says. "Not if she had any say in the matter, at least. Did he tell you elsewise? The he that tried to turn you into a ravaging beast of light, I mean." Alisaie shakes her head. "Just a feeling." Venat is back smiling. "Perhaps not entirely off the mark. All that meet you love you in some way or another. I've never known her to have taken a lover, though. She's something of a lonesome soul beneath all of her many, many friendships. She's ever seemed fulfilled by her work. And her adventures, of course." Venat's smile does not fade when she admits, " imagine that if he attempted to initiate such a partnership with her, she'd bolt from the Convocation. He can barely keep her strapped to her seat as it stands." Alisaie listens to this. She murmurs, "I'd have thought I'd be more loyal than that." Venat snorts. "To Emet-Selch?" "To those I considered my friends." Alisaie gazes out towards a setting sun in all its unfractured splendor. She thinks of a restless woman and a journey of infinite steps. "Perhaps you're not entirely the same," Venat suggests. "Does she come home?" "Home?" "To... wherever you live," Alisaie clarifies.$

Venat replies, "I am no home to her."
Alisaie supposes that makes sense. "To her family?"
"Ah," Venat says. "I do not believe they are a home to her either."
Alisaie thinks of her disownment. She thinks of having to sneak into her own house to hug her own mother.
"What are her parents like?" Alisaie asks.
Venat seems to have to ponder this for a moment.
"I do believe they're researchers but I could not tell you in what specialty. If she ever told me, the memory is long discarded." Her laugh is cheerful and tinkling. "She was not the type of daughter to mind her elders, I assure you."
"And her brother?"
"Brother?"
"What is her brother like?" Alisaie asks.
Venat stares at her, silent. Her eyes are icy blue and blank and Alisaie knows, instantly, somehow, before this woman even answers—a sick inky feeling sinking into Alisaie's stomach—a bile in the back of her throat—that there is no brother. There has never been a brother.
"A child is a commitment centuries in the fostering and pruning," Venat says, "centuries that could be spent on less consumptive pursuits. Most partners never have one child, much less two."

A trail of blood leads out of Garlemald. The scene flashbacks to an injured Wol facing Aulus Asina during the soul extraction mechanic. The Wol's soul rises out of their lifeless body and reaches towards a shocked Aulus.

"-and again. A phoenix does not pray...nor does it beg. It simply claws through its ashes to protect what it must. No matter what."

The scene cuts to the Wol in the body of a Garlean soldier from the "in from the cold" quest, crawling through the snow. Zenos (in Wol's body) looms over a terrified Alphinaud and Alisaie.

Wol: Zenos!!

"And if a phoenix must burn...Then let it."

The Garlean soldier/Wol rises from ground, covered in flames of aether. A phoenix wing sprouts from her back.

Wol: Get away!!

A single charred feather lands in the snow.
